Huge fire rips through newly-refurbished Scots hotel as crews battle blaze through the night

A huge fire has ripped through a newly-refurbished hotel in St Andrews. Fire crews were called to St. Michael’s Inn, near Leuchars after the alarm was raised at around 10pm on Tuesday, April 29.
At the height of the blaze, nine appliances and four specialist resources were dispatched to the scene. Images shared on social media showed flames spreading at the inn with a large number of emergency services in attendance.
A plume of smoke could be seen billowing up into the night sky as firefighters tackled the inferno. Police could also be seen watching on with a large area cordoned off.
As of 7am on Tuesday morning, six appliances and three specialist appliances remained on scene to tackle a well-developed fire. There are no reported casualties but crews are urging nearby residents to keep windows and doors closed.
Fife Council said drivers are facing disruption due to the blaze. In a post on social media, the council said: “Major disruption to roads in North East Fife, towards Dundee, due to fire at St Michael’s Inn.”
The roads affected are the A914 Dairsie to St Michaels, A919 Leuchars to St Michaels, B945 Tayport to St Michaels, C12 between A92 and A914 from Forgan Roundabout to St Michaels. A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “Fire crews are currently in attendance at a commercial building fire at St. Michaels Inn, Leuchars, St Andrews.
“Six fire appliances and three specialist resources remain at the scene. People are asked to avoid the area and take alternative routes. Surrounding residents are asked to close windows and doors as a precautionary measure.”
The cause of the blaze is currently unclear but police are not treating the fire as suspicious.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: Around 10.40pm on Tuesday, April 28, we received a report of a fire at St Michaels Inn, Leuchars. All roads are still closed surrounding the junction at the hotel.
“The A914 is restricted between Forgan Roundabout and St Michaels and there are also restrictions affecting the A919 to Leuchars and B945 to Tayport. Motorists are advised to find alternative routes. The fire is not being treated as suspicious.”
