‘In the dark of the night…’: Karl Stefanovic’s ex Cassandra Thorburn shares heartbreaking ca:ncer update

Cassandra Thorburn shares heartbreaking ‘dark of the night’ reality of rare cancer battle

Australian journalist and author Cassandra Thorburn has opened up about the profound isolation of cancer treatment, delivering a raw and emotional update to her followers as she battles a rare form of the disease.

The mother-of-three—who was married to Today host Karl Stefanovic for 21 years—has maintained a fiercely determined outlook since sharing her diagnosis in February. However, her latest update exposes the quiet, challenging reality of undergoing chemotherapy.

Taking to Instagram alongside a photo showing her recent hair loss, the Mosman-based writer spoke directly to others walking the same path.

“A one foot in front of the other kind of day walking to Chemo treatment today,” Thorburn shared. “Sending everyone on the chemo journey, especially those of you on your own, a virtual hug.

“I am with you in the dark of the night when the house is quiet and your thoughts are loud.”

In an effort to manage the grueling physical and emotional toll of her regime, Thorburn revealed she is turning to mindfulness and community support, enrolling in the acclaimed national cancer support program, Look Good Feel Better.

The poignant update comes months after Thorburn shocked followers by debuting a shaved head and revealing she had been diagnosed with triple-negative occult breast cancer (OBC)—a rare and aggressive form of the disease where cancer cells are found in the lymph nodes but the primary tumor cannot be identified on a standard mammogram.

At the time, Thorburn praised the team at Toni & Guy Mosman for helping her take control of her appearance with a “kick arse clipper treatment” before the chemo took hold.

“Life really is like a box of chocolates and this chapter is giving me praline or truffle vibes,” she wrote at the time. “It will grow back – super grateful.”

Reflecting on her decision to go public with her diagnosis, the veteran media personality said transparency was her way of reclaiming control over an unpredictable situation, both for herself and her adult children.

“For my adult children and for myself, I’m not interested in hiding and that’s because I’m not alone,” Thorburn said in a subsequent video. “I’m not walking a path that is not well travelled by many women before me and I will not be the last.

“Breast cancer affects one in seven women in New South Wales, which is where I live. I read that sitting for my mammogram not long ago and I was the one in seven that day.”

Thorburn has used her platform to urge Australian women not to delay routine health checks, credited BreastScreen NSW for detecting her rare condition.

“My shout-out today is for NSW Breast Screen, who picked up my triple negative occult breast cancer, which is no small feat… I thank them from the bottom of my heart,” she said.

“When your mammogram reminder arrives in the mail, don’t dilly dally. Do as I did, book it straight away. It may have flipped my world in days, but there’s no ‘why me?’ There’s no ‘poor me’ here. Just a desire to stop this in its tracks.”
