Australian screen veteran Vernon Wells, best known for playing some of the most memorable villains of the 1980s, has been spotted in Los Angeles in a rare public appearance, decades after becoming a cult favourite in Hollywood action and sci-fi films.
The 80-year-old actor was photographed during what appeared to be a trip to a Target store, sporting long grey hair and a relaxed look in a blue button-down shirt paired with brown trousers—a far cry from the fearsome characters that made him famous.
The Villain Who Helped Define Mad Max 2
For Australian audiences, Wells remains best remembered as Wez, the terrifying marauder from Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981).
His unforgettable performance opposite Mel Gibson cemented his place in Australian film history, particularly the film’s iconic opening sequence, where Wez tears an arrow from his own arm after being struck by friendly fire before unleashing a chilling cry for revenge.
The role transformed Wells into one of cinema’s most recognisable villains and introduced him to international audiences.
From Mel Gibson to Arnold Schwarzenegger
Just a few years later, Wells took on another career-defining role as the ruthless mercenary Bennett in the 1985 action classic Commando, starring opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Although Schwarzenegger reportedly had initial doubts about Wells’ appearance during casting, those concerns quickly disappeared after filming their first major confrontation scene.
The Hollywood star was said to have been so impressed by Wells’ performance that the pair developed a lasting friendship, with Schwarzenegger later describing the Australian actor as “a sweet, generous human being.”
Meanwhile, Wells and Mel Gibson also shared a close friendship while filming Mad Max 2 across outback New South Wales and around Broken Hill.
According to behind-the-scenes stories, Gibson even nicknamed his co-star “Barometer Bum”, joking that the freezing desert temperatures would turn Wells’ exposed skin purple beneath his character’s famous leather costume.
A Career Built on Iconic Bad Guys
Rather than shy away from his villainous image, Wells later embraced it.
He famously parodied his own screen persona in the 1985 sci-fi comedy Weird Science, playing a character deliberately inspired by his unforgettable performances in Mad Max 2 and Commando.
In 2001, he once again became the central antagonist when he portrayed Ransik in Power Rangers Time Force, introducing himself to an entirely new generation of viewers.
Still Working at 80
Despite turning 80, Wells has shown little interest in slowing down.
According to IMDb, the veteran actor has 22 projects in various stages of production, including completed films, productions currently shooting, and titles in post-production or pre-production.
While he has praised later entries in the Mad Max franchise—including Mad Max: Fury Road starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron—Wells believes his portrayal of Wez remains impossible to recreate.
“I seriously think that it would be very difficult to duplicate me, because it’s kind of a unique character,” he previously said.
Heartbreak Beyond Hollywood
Away from the cameras, Wells has shared more than three decades of marriage with his wife, Grace Kono-Wells.
The couple faced devastating heartbreak in January 2025 when they lost their Los Angeles home in the destructive wildfires.
Reflecting on the tragedy during an interview with Australia’s Sunrise, Wells admitted the scale of the loss was overwhelming.
“Forty-odd years of my life and my wife’s life are gone. It hasn’t sunk in.”
Despite losing everything, the veteran actor remained remarkably optimistic, saying the memories built over a lifetime could never truly be taken away.
“Everything can be replaced in your mind. Everything is there.”
