PRINCE William and Princess Kate are looking to upsize their home and find a grander family residence, according to royal sources.

The Mail on Sunday reported that the Prince and Princess of Wales could move from their modest four-bedroom Adelaide Cottage in Windsor, for a more extravagant home.

One of the options, according to insiders, is Fort Belvedere, a gothic mansion located a stone’s throw away in the Windsor Great Park.

The property spans 59 acres of expansive grounds and includes a rose garden, walled garden, kitchen garden, spacious greenhouse, stables, two lakes, paddocks, and three staff cottages.

A source told the publication: “They feel they have outgrown Adelaide Cottage and need somewhere more substantial.

“This is the perfect new home for them. It has a swimming pool and tennis court, and Charlotte loves playing tennis.”

However, it is not thought a move will be imminent, and William and Kate are weighing up their options.

Previously, they are said to have considered Prince Andrew’s Royal Lodge — but he will reportedly not budge.

Andrew sealed a 75-year lease on 31-bedroom Royal Lodge in 2003 with a payment of £1million.

Royal sources previously dismissed claims the couple were to have apartments in Windsor Castle.

The couple have lived at Adelaide Cottage since 2022, and it’s close to the kids’ school, Lambrook School.

It is also where Kate recovered from her cancer chemotherapy, after being diagnosed last year.

The couple are now looking for a new senior school for Prince George, who will move when he is 13.

FORT’S HISTORY

For decades the home – which remains part of the Crown Estate and sits on a 59 acre estate – has slipped under the radar, but it could be a great home for the Wales family.

Fort Belvedere was built in 1750-55 for the Duke of Cumberland and expanded in the Gothic Revival style in the 1820s for King George IV.

Queen Victoria used the place as a tea house and opened it to the public in the 1860s.

Famously it became the favourite home of Edward VIII, who lived there before he became monarch and after he controversially abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson.

Edward renovated the property to the tune of £21,000, which would have been over £1.8million in 2022, and is said to have thrown exclusive lavish parties at the property.

American divorcee Wallis moved into the home after receiving threatening letters for her relationship with Edward, and it was at Fort Belvedere that he signed the Instrument of Abdication to give up the throne in 1936.

They then moved to France, and years later, their home was used for the filming of the ITV drama, Edward and Mrs Simpson.

Fort Belvedere is a Grade II listed building and has some quirky features, like an octagonal dining room, added by George IV, and a set of 31 guns which were used to fire salutes until 1907, often for Queen Victoria.

During World War II, the place was occupied by the Office of the Commissioners of Crown Lands, after evacuating their London offices.

MODERN RE-DO

Fort Belvedere then stood empty until 1956 when the Queen‘s cousin, Hon. Gerald Lascelles moved in.

He did away with a lot of Edward’s refurbishments, reducing the vast 30-40 room house to a more family-friendly place comprising six bedrooms, and five bathrooms along with three cottages for staff.

There’s also a swimming pool and a tennis court, which would appeal to tennis fan Kate.

There are also stables, which is good news for George, 12, Charlotte, 10, and Louis, seven, who are keen riders, having started taking lessons while holed up in Anmer Hall during the pandemic.

Gerald gave up the lease in the 1970s, following his divorce, and Canadian billionaire Galen Weston moved in.

His family – which owns a majority in Associated British Foods, the company that controls Primark – continue to occupy it.

The Westons also built a polo stud, and King Charles III played polo there with Galen and stables his ponies on the premises.

The retail magnate recently died but his wife Hilary and family continued to live there.

They have extended the lake and added a polo stud to the land, which might appeal to William who is a keen player.
