Sam Armytage Backs Karl Stefanovic as She Addresses Growing Today Show Replacement Rumours

Samantha Armytage has offered warm words of support for Karl Stefanovic while also addressing mounting speculation that she could become part of the next chapter of Channel Nine’s Today show.

The veteran television presenter praised Stefanovic’s decision to pursue a different direction following his departure from Nine, suggesting that reaching a new stage in life can often change a person’s priorities.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Armytage described Stefanovic as someone who is “very good at what he does” and wished him well with his next project.

“I wish him well with his new project. He’s in his 50s now. I think your life changes in your 50s. You start thinking differently,” the 49-year-old said.

“And when you work for a network for a long time — I know, I’ve been there — there’s a lot of familiarity in that and you look for something else perhaps. So I salute him.”

Armytage Responds to Today Show Speculation

Armytage’s comments come as attention increasingly turns to the future of Today following Stefanovic’s departure from Nine.

Asked whether she could ultimately take a seat on the breakfast program, the former Sunrise star did not completely close the door on the possibility.

However, she made it clear that no permanent position had been formally offered.

“I love breakfast TV. I’ve done it for a long time. I know how to do it, I enjoy it, and I’m doing some fill-in stuff coming up, which will be great,” she said.

“But there is no job offered.”

Her comments are likely to fuel further interest in Nine’s plans as the network considers a number of possible combinations for the program.

Nine Continues to Test Potential Presenting Partnerships

Armytage and Sylvia Jeffreys are reportedly among the experienced presenters expected to spend time in the co-hosting chair as Nine evaluates its options.

The process comes during a period of significant change for Today.

Stefanovic is no longer part of the program, while Sarah Abo has begun an earlier-than-expected absence ahead of welcoming her first child, leaving Nine with an opportunity — and a major challenge — as it considers the future direction of its flagship breakfast show.

For now, Armytage remains one of the most intriguing names connected to the program.

Her extensive breakfast television experience makes her an obvious figure in the wider conversation, but her insistence that there is currently “no job offered” leaves the question of Today’s future line-up firmly open.

Stefanovic Begins a New Chapter

Stefanovic’s departure brought forward what had already been expected to be the end of his long tenure with Today.

Nine confirmed in June that Stefanovic would leave the network immediately, saying it was no longer possible for him to continue hosting the breakfast program while also pursuing his independent podcast.

Stefanovic had spent more than two decades as one of the most recognisable faces of Today, making the task of finding a permanent successor one of Nine’s biggest current programming decisions.

Meanwhile, changes have also surrounded The Long Weekend, the radio program Stefanovic briefly co-hosted with Eddie McGuire.

Stefanovic appeared in only two episodes before leaving the program, with McGuire continuing alongside other members of the team.

As Nine weighs up what comes next for Today, Armytage’s comments offer an interesting perspective on both sides of the unfolding story: support for a television veteran choosing a new path, and a reminder that despite all the speculation surrounding her own future, no permanent move has yet been confirmed.
