Karl Stefanovic’s Podcast Surges After Mainstream Media Deals Collapse

Karl Stefanovic may have seen major mainstream media opportunities fall away in recent weeks, but his independent podcast appears to be moving in the opposite direction.

After parting ways with both Nine and ARN following his controversial interview with Tommy Robinson, Stefanovic has faced heavy public criticism. Yet the attention surrounding the fallout has also helped drive a sharp rise in audience numbers for The Karl Stefanovic Show.

The interview with Robinson became a major turning point for Stefanovic’s media career, leading to the end of two major sources of income. However, the podcast has reportedly experienced strong growth since the backlash began.

In the past fortnight, The Karl Stefanovic Show has gained 68,000 YouTube subscribers and attracted more than 300,000 unique viewers.

The growth has not been limited to YouTube. Spotify audience numbers reportedly increased by 40 per cent compared with the previous seven days, while Instagram followers rose by 36 per cent.

On Facebook, the show saw a 41 per cent jump in followers and recorded 21.6 million views.

Australian Audiences Are Still Driving The Growth

Despite Robinson being a UK figure, the surge in attention has largely come from Australian viewers rather than overseas audiences.

According to the figures cited, the podcast’s audience remains 96 per cent Australian on Instagram, 97 per cent Australian on Facebook, and 79 per cent Australian on YouTube.

There has been some international interest, with the UK audience reportedly increasing by 5 per cent since the interview, but Australian audiences still appear to be the main force behind the show’s momentum.

Producer Says The Growth Has Been ‘Incredibly Humbling’

Keshnee “Kesh” Kemp, co-founder and producer of The Karl Stefanovic Show, said the response across platforms had been significant.

“It’s been incredibly humbling to see the growth across all platforms of our show. We tested UK content with our audience before we went overseas, and the sign was clear: they wanted more of it,” she told news.com.au.

She said the podcast’s audience had shown strong support for Stefanovic’s decision to platform different perspectives.

“The support for Karl and his right to share different perspectives has been overwhelmingly positive,” Kemp said.

“It means a great deal to us that our community is rising up for the right to hear other voices and we will continue to champion that across our network of shows.”

The Podcast Network Is Preparing To Expand

Kemp added that the team is now looking toward the next stage of growth, with plans to expand the podcast beyond its current format.

“Now we move into the next phase of growth: expanding into multiple shows, continuing to grow our cross-platform verticals and doubling down on what our audience has told us they want to hear about,” she said.

“We’ll also continue to venture into different topics and themes as Karl wants to — that’s the beauty of it being The Karl Stefanovic Show!”

The comments suggest Stefanovic’s team sees the recent controversy not only as a challenge, but also as an opportunity to build a larger independent media presence.

Before his departure from Nine, Stefanovic had spoken about ambitions to grow the podcast beyond Australia.

“Sky News has done a great job in the US,” he said.

“We don’t have the resources that they have, but the way they’ve been able to identify and take advantage of certain sides of things in the US has been really successful for them.”

Stefanovic said the goal was to build something similar, but on a smaller and more personal scale.

“I think that will work for us in a much more scaled-down way and be something that we’ll do in our own right, with our flavour and our tastes,” he explained.

Mainstream Exit Marks A New Chapter

Stefanovic’s contract with Nine, reportedly worth more than $2 million, was due to expire in December. His ARN radio role was also said to be worth around $200,000, though that show lasted less than two months.

Within a short period, Stefanovic lost two high-profile mainstream media roles. But while the fallout has damaged his position inside traditional broadcasting, it appears to have strengthened his independent audience.

After leaving Nine, Stefanovic declared he was “free” — and for now, the numbers suggest his podcast is turning that freedom into momentum.
