In a statement released on Tuesday, Modra said he was only beginning to process the support he and his loved ones had received since the accident.

“I have left hospital to continue my recovery at home and only now starting to wrap my head around the incredible amount of support and well wishes that have come our way,” Modra said.

The former AFL star also thanked the members of the public who stopped to help him at the crash scene, as well as the emergency responders and medical teams involved in his care.

“I remain deeply grateful to the members of the public who gave me vital first aid until professional help arrived, to others who offered reassurance, and to the emergency responders, medical staff and specialists who have cared for me since the accident,” he said.

While Modra’s return home is a positive step, he made it clear that his recovery journey is still ongoing.

“My progress has been encouraging and we kindly ask that our privacy continues to be respected as we focus on my rehabilitation. Thank you,” he added.

Modra was airlifted to Flinders Medical Centre after the crash at Back Valley, south of Adelaide. He reportedly underwent surgery for injuries to his cheek, jaw and eye socket following the accident.

At the time, there had been serious concern for his condition, with reports suggesting those close to him were relieved after he began taking significant steps forward.

Wife Erica Thanks Those Who Helped

Modra’s wife, Erica, previously described the incident as a “freak accident” and thanked the people who helped in the moments immediately after the crash.

“We are extremely grateful to the three passersby – including two people who were trained in first aid and another who provided comfort – who stopped to help within seconds,” she said.

She also praised emergency services for their swift response and care.

“The emergency services’ professionalism, care and swift action were extraordinary as well. Without doubt, they all played a critical role in saving Anthony’s life.”

A Beloved Name In AFL History

Modra remains one of the most admired figures in Australian football, best remembered for his spectacular marking, goal sense and unforgettable years with the Adelaide Crows.

Across his AFL career, he kicked 588 goals from 165 games and earned two All-Australian selections. He later spent the final three seasons of his career with Fremantle.

For fans who have followed his journey, the news that Modra is now home brings a welcome sense of relief after weeks of concern. His rehabilitation will take time, but this latest update marks an important and hopeful step forward.
