THE father of missing Deirdre Jacob says a Garda cadaver dog unit must be set up.

Michael Jacob made the call as cops continue to probe the teen’s murder.

Deirdre, 18, left, went missing from outside her home in Newbridge, Kildare, on July 28, 1998.

Her case was upgraded to a murder probe in 2018.

Although a search took place earlier this year in Wicklow, cops did not recover her remains.

As detectives continue to appeal for information, Mr Jacob believes more needs to be done to support the families of the 900 people missing in Ireland.

In searches for murder victim Tina Satchwell and murder probes of Annie McCarrick and Willie Maughan, cadaver dogs — trained to find human remains — were handed over to the Gardai from the PSNI.

Mr Jacob told The Irish Sun: “The PSNI covers a much smaller geographical area and they have a cadaver dog.

“It’s essential for the Gardai to have one.

“The Gardai must be better equipped.

“Lessons should be learned from previous searches.

“Deirdre’s case remains active and ongoing and we hope that every tool is made available as they continue to investigate the disappearance of hundreds of people across Ireland.”

As the search for his daughter continues, Michael added: “We would again encourage anyone with the slightest bit of information to come forward and let the Gardai judge it.”
