A MAN has appeared in court charged over the assault of his father who later died.

John Cashman, 73, was discovered with serious injuries outside his Georgian home at Rockfield, Cappagh in Co Waterford on Monday evening.

Emergency services attempted to resuscitate him at the scene but he was pronounced dead there.

His son, 45-year-old John Cashman Jnr, of the same address, appeared before Carrick-on-Suir District Court today.

Detective Garda Martin Keohane gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

He told the court the accused was charged at Dungarvan Garda Station at 9pm on Tuesday night, to which he made no reply.

Cashman Jnr faces a rap of assault causing harm contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1977.

The accused made an application for bail through his solicitor Eamonn Hayes.

Gardai objected saying the offence was of a serious nature and more serious charges may be sought.

Det Gda Keohane explained that gardai were still awaiting post-mortem results.

Another concern raised was that the Cashman Jnr had ties to the UK.

Cashman Jnr’s defence claimed that he was confronted by his father and he acted in self-defence.

He denied kicking his father to the head while he was on the ground.

It was further claimed that the man fell and hit his head off the ground.

The accused runs a machinery refurbishment specialist business and lived in an annex of the Georgian home.

He had moved back to Ireland from the UK in 2021 and bought land in Waterford. He has no interests back in the UK, the defence insisted.

His mother Gillian Cashman was at the hearing to support her son, the court heard.

Solicitor Mr Hynes explained that Cashman Snr was “at odds with the family”.

Cashman Jnr, giving evidence in the application, said he had not spoken to his father in a number of years.

He insisted he would abide by all terms and conditions set out by the court.

His mother Mrs Cashman told how she believes in her son’s “integrity and honesty to abide by the law”.

Judge O’Leary considered the matter before he denied bail.

Cashman Jnr was remanded in custody to appear before Clonmel District Court next Tuesday.
