Transfer Tension Peaks: Isak Drops Bombshell, Arsenal’s Bold Move Sparks Debate, Man Utd in Trouble

The Alexander Isak transfer saga has taken another twist, with the news that the Liverpool target will NOT be going on Newcastle’s trip to Asia – and that he wants to consider LEAVING the club.

The Reds have splashed almost £300m this summer, with Hugo Ekitike’s switch now signed, sealed and delivered, but they’re still keen on taking Isak to Anfield – and he’s keen on the move. Newcastle insist that, officially, he’s staying home due to a thigh injury and the flight to Asia would do more harm than good. But this is unlikely to be the end of it… potentially it’s just the start.

Arsenal are also big fans of Isak, but they’re set to land their new No.9 – with Mikel Arteta taking their summer spend close to the £200m mark – with the arrival of Viktor Gyokeres. That deal is dragging on somewhat however.

After so long on the outside at Manchester United, with so much conjecture and being brutally and unequivocally dumped by Ruben Amorim, Marcus Rashford is gone and has his dream move to Barcelona.

Elsewhere, Chelsea are moving for two more of Europe’s bright young talents, while Brighton are busy, with Pervis Estupinan the latest player to depart.

Elliott’s Liverpool update

Liverpool star Harvey Elliott has again revealed that he’s open to leaving the club. Elliott, 22, is reportedly a target for West Ham after a bittersweet season at Anfield.

“Look, if I had it my way, I’d be here for the rest of my career, it’s as simple as that, I love everything about the club,” Elliott told The Anfield Wrap in Hong Kong.

“But at the same time I kind of need to be selfish with myself and see what’s best for me. I have big ambitions. I want to go to the World Cup. I want to keep being successful as a player.”

Why keeping Isak is key

Since Newcastle had their Saudi owners arrive one thing that has been key is that they’ve never had to lose one of their leading lights. They’re yet to have a top star picked off them by a team that are already a giant.

Alexander Isak is their main man, but the likes of Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes have both been linked with exits, but ultimately stayed put.

Should one of those leave though and the Newcastle project would undoubtedly take a step back. Thus making the need to keep Isak all the more important.

FULL STORY: Isak tells Newcastle he wants to explore transfer

Alexander Isak has told Newcastle that he wants to explore a move away in a bombshell development. Isak, 25, has put Liverpool on red alert after they made an approach to sign him last week.

The Premier League champions were told by Newcastle that the striker wasn’t for sale and Liverpool turned their focus to fellow striker Hugo Ekitike. On Wednesday, Liverpool announced the signing of 23-year-old Ekitike after agreeing a £79million deal with Eintracht Frankfurt.

It then emerged that Isak hadn’t travelled with Newcastle’s squad for their pre-season tour of Asia. Newcastle insisted that the Swede has been nursing a minor thigh injury and medical staff were concerned about the long-haul flight.

However, as first reported by The Daily Mail, Isak has informed Newcastle that he wishes to consider his options and explore a transfer away from the club. He also doesn’t want to commit to signing a new contract, with his current deal not expiring until 2028.

If Newcastle were forced to sell, they’d demand a fee in excess of £125m – a new British record. Saudi Arabian giants Al-Hilal have also been linked with a money-spinning move, but are, of course, have the same overall ownership as the Magpies.

Chelsea move in on TWO Arsenal targets

Arsenal have been credited with interest in Ajax defender Jorrel Hato and RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons this summer – but now Chelsea could scoop them both up.

Hato, a 19-year-old centre-back, has been linked with Liverpool as well, having caught the eye of many scouts with his play. Arsenal have moved ahead with Mosquera instead, so may be out of the race for him.

Arteta breaks transfer rule again

Arsenal are close to announcing the signing of Gyokeres after prolonged negotiations with Sporting. The Gunners had initially appeared to prefer Benjamin Sesko, in part due to his younger age.

The fact they have decided on 27-year-old Gyokeres is interesting, because it goes against Arteta’s own philosophy in the transfer market. Usually, they avoid signing players who are over the age of 25, believing younger players have a higher ceiling and will retain their value better.

However, Gyokeres isn’t the first player for which Arsenal have broken that rule this summer, with the arrivals of Arrizabalaga and Norgaard also contradicting their philosophy.

Man Utd’s next move…

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim led from the front when the squad arrived at their Chicago hotel to begin their pre-season tour.

United boss Amorim was one of the first off the team bus when it pulled up at the plush Waldorf Astoria hotel, only pausing to high-five members of security staff as he made his way in.

But leading from the front on the pitch is continuing to prove problematic for Amorim, whose summer search for a striker to solve United’s goalscoring crisis has so far drawn a blank. A meagre haul of 44 goals in the Premier League last season, as United finished 15th, their worst placing for 51 years, should have made recruiting a striker their priority in the summer window.

Williams could be handed lifeline

Former Manchester United full back Brandon Williams could be handed a fresh chance by Besiktas.

The Turkish giants are managed by ex-United boss Solskjaer who gave Williams his debut in 2019 while in charge at Old Trafford.

Williams, now 24, is a free agent and is looking for a new club as he wants to kickstart his career after being given a suspended jail sentence for dangerous driving back in May.

Ex-United academy graduate Williams, who had spells at Norwich City and Ipswich, was seen as a big star of the future after breaking into the United first team.

Williams could now be an option for Besiktas and there is a strong link with Solskjaer who always praised the former England under-21 full back.

In return, Williams said of Solskjaer on a recent podcast: “For me, he’s been probably the best I’ve worked under. Even off the pitch, speaking to you, giving you advice, especially because I was young as well – he was like a really good mentor.”

What’s happening with Alexander Isak?

Left out against Celtic at the weekend – Eddie Howe’s decision insists the Newcastle United boss – Alexander Isak was spotted training alone yesterday amid reports he has picked up a minor injury.

We’ve not been able to substantiate those reports, but Newcastle World reports that he underwent a scan this week after ‘discomfort’ in his thigh.

Rumours continue to suggest he wants to move to Liverpool. There was certainly interest from Saudi Arabia in a mega-money move, but that’s apparently a no go for the Swede.

Liverpool love him – as do Arsenal, but they didn’t think he was gettable, so moved on Viktor Gyokeres.

The Reds have moved on Hugo Ekitike of course, but there’s still more than a suggestion that they WOULD do a deal for around £120m if Newcastle gave the green light. As it stands, Newcastle are insisting he’s going nowhere.

Daniel Farke furious with wantaway Leeds star

Leeds boss Daniel Farke is unhappy with wantaway striker Mateo Joseph.

The Spain Under-21 international is after a move and has refused to link up with Leeds on their pre-season tour in Germany.

Speaking after Tuesday’s 4-1 win over SC Verl, the Leeds boss said: “I’ve spoken openly and honestly with him about the situation and have strongly recommended, until the situation is sorted, he should do the job and be professional.

“He said he’s not in the mental state to do this. What should I do? I can’t call the police to drag him here on the training pitch.

“It was his decision. For that, he trains at the moment in England, individually, and will then also train with under-21s at Thorp Arch. He has also hinted he prefers a move to Spain due to his Spanish roots and, yes, that was more or less his call.

“If this is your wish, I, as a manager, won’t stand in the way and [I] accept this because I just want players who want to be here and are buzzing. I’ve said, ‘Okay, Mateo, I accept this, I won’t stand in the way’.

“On the other hand, it’s also clear we, as a club, have invested a lot in him. Time, money, backing and he is on the long-term contract and we value him. One thing is also for sure, we will just make a move possible once there is a club who meets the expectations of the club.”

Starting with St Mirren!

St Mirren have made signings for the short and long term as manager Stephen Robinson increases his attacking options.

The Buddies have confirmed the signing of 22-year-old Jamaican forward Jalmaro Calvin, subject to a work permit. They’ve also secured Cork City winger Malik Dijksteel on a pre-contract agreement which will see him arrive in Paisley in January, when his contract with the League of Ireland side expires.

Calvin is a former team-mate of fellow summer signing Richard King. The pair played together at Jamaican Premier League side Cavalier, where Calvin scored 39 goals in 101 appearances. He has signed a two-year deal with the club holding an option for a further season.

Robinson told St Mirren’s website: “Jalmaro was a player that kept coming up every time we looked at Richard. We’ve built up a really good relationship with Cavalier and their owner Rudolph Speed.

“Jalmaro has real pace and energy. He can play wide and he can play through the middle. We need to build him up. He’s a project for us in terms of getting him used to the Scottish game and the physicality, but his electric pace will give us something that we don’t have in the squad at this time.

“He reminds me of Toyosi Olusanya in terms of that raw pace that he can offer us in the wide areas.”

Ten Hag blocks Xhaka exit

Well how about this?

Earlier today, news circulated that Granit Xhaka was set to join Premier League newboys Sunderland, who were close to agreeing a deal with Bayer Leverkusen.

It’s understood that the Arsenal captain has already agreed terms on a three-year deal at the Stadium of Light – but Leverkusen boss said he won’t allow the move to happen.

Having already lost Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Jonathan Tah this summer and Ten Hag said he cannot afford for any more key players to depart.

When asked about Xhaka’s agent claiming Leverkusen had given permission for the player to depart, he responded: “The agent can say anything. This club has already sold three important players. We can’t let anyone else go. That would undermine the structure and culture of the squad.”

Felix set for Benfica return

It looks like Joao Felix is on the verge of ending his Chelsea nightmare – just a year after signing for the Blues in a £46m deal.

It seemed like a strange deal as the Portuguese star was brought in but immediately sidelined by boss Enzo Maresca – and by January he was loaned to AC Milan.

But he stuggled in Serie A too as he netted just twice from eight starts. Now a return to his boyhood club Benfica is on the cards, as reported by Record.

Benfica are said to be offering as much as £21m, but Chelsea are holding out for more – though they will struggle to recoup the £46m they paid for him.

Sporting Lisbon hunting Gyokeres replacement

He will be one tough act to follow, but Sporting Lisbon are already making succession plans for Viktor Gyokeres.

The Sweden star is on his way to Arsenal after a £63.8m move was agreed and Sporting are about to have a lot of cash to burn.

According to Record, they’ve identified Gyokeres’ successor – Almeria striker Luis Javier Suarez, who netted 31 times in the Segunda Division last season.

It’s claimed they’ve made a bid of around £23m for the Colombian, who is keen to move to Portugal.

More on Wissa

It’s understood Wissa has left Brentford’s pre-season training camp in Portugal after telling the club he needs to sort his future out.

Wissa is believed to be keen on joining Newcastle and the prospect of playing Champions League football.

What’s more, Newcastle believe they can get a deal for the player – who only has a year left on his contract, according to Sky Sports.

A second bid of £30m plus add-ons is expected – though Brentford will play hardball over the striker after already letting Mbeumo leave.

Al-Nassr U-turn on Hancko signing

Here’s a bit of an eyebrow raiser from Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s team looked all set to snap up Feyenoord defender David Hancko, with the Slovenian centre-back in line to join them for around £35m.

The player reportedly cleared out his apartment and flew out to the team’s training camp in Austria to finalise his move. But then it’s claimed he was not allowed into the team’s hotel – and was forced to wait for several days in a nearby hotel for clarity before the club decided to cancel the deal altogether.

That led to fury from Feyenoord, with team spokesman Raymond Salomon calling Al-Nassr’s behaviour “outrageous”.

“He had reached an agreement with Al-Nassr, and so had Feyenoord,” he said. “Then they let him come to the training camp, only to tell him he was no longer welcome there suddenly. That’s unprecedented.”

Newcastle’s Wissa bid rejected

Newcastle are still eager to sign a striker after watching target Hugo Ekitike snub them for Liverpool and now they are making a move for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa.

According to the Athletic, the Magpies have had a £25m bid for Wissa rejected by the Bees, who will be unwilling to lose another key forward after selling Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United for £70m.

Newcastle haven’t given up on Wissa, it says, with personal terms not expected to be a problem if they can find a solution with Brentford.

Liverpool monitoring Rodrygo

Remember all those stories about how Liverpool came close to signing Rodrygo all those years ago, before Real Madrid beat them to it?

Well now it appears the Brazilian winger could become a target for Arne Slot as his future at the Bernabeu continues to grow uncertain.

Sky in Germany are claiming that Rodrygo is an option for Liverpool in the event Luis Diaz departs.

It says Liverpool have been informed about Rodrygo’s current conditions and status, with Madrid open to selling him – though it would be an “expensive package” for the Reds if they wanted to ahead with the deal.

Maguire missing from tour

Could this be a sign that Harry Maguire could leave Old Trafford?

Sky Sports are reporting that Maguire has not travelled with United for their pre-season tour in the United States due to “personal reasons”.

The centre-back featured prominently under Amorim last season but the Portuguese coach is leading a shake-up of his squad, with Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo already arriving.

The report says Maguire could still join up with the rest of the squad at a later date, but for now he joins Jadon Sancho, Antony, Alejandro Garncho, Tyrell Malacia and Barcelona-bound Marcus Rashford in missing the trip.

Arsenal closing in on Gyokeres

Still no official deal for Gyokeres just yet, but Arsenal fans will be hopeful that this transfer is not far away from completion.

The Athletic are reporting that Arsenal and Sporting Lisbon are on the verge of total agreement for Viktor Gyokeres, with the deal including a £55m fee plus £8.6m in bonuses – but add-ons still need rubber-stamping before the deal can be closed.

The report says only “finishing touches” are required, with a long-awaited conclusion now “imminent”. Once everything is signed, Gyokeres will sign a five-year deal at the Emirates and become their fifth signing of the summer.

Slot’s Ekitike call

Hugo Ekitike is closing in on a £79million move to Liverpool, having been persuaded to join the club after holding talks with manager Arne Slot.

According to ESPN, Slot spoke with the player over Zoom and explained how Ekitike fit into his plans, with the Dutchman keen to sign a ‘mobile and dynamic No.9 who could combine brilliance on the ball with tenacity and intelligence off it’.

It is claimed that Ekitike felt he was the ‘perfect fit’ after speaking with the Liverpool boss and the report quotes a source as saying Slot pulled off a “masterclass”.

Latest on Alexander Isak

Alexander Isak may have missed part of Newcastle United’s pre-season preparation due to transfer speculation, but the Swedish forward now looks set to board a flight this week.

Not for Merseyside, we hasten to add. Instead, Eddie Howe insists he WILL be on the Magpies’ flight for their pre-season tour.

Latest on the £120m-rated star’s situation with Howe saying:

“Yes, absolutely. He’s part of our squad. At this moment in time, I expect him to come.

“I’d never give a guarantee about anybody [staying] because I’ve been in football long enough to know I could end up looking silly. But, the desire from everybody to keep him is as strong as it could be. Fingers crossed that will happen for us.”

Spurs fancy Palhinha

Tottenham have become the latest club to be linked with Bayern Munich’s Joao Palhinha, who is said to have been the subject of interest from Arsenal earlier in the summer.

Spurs are in the market for new additions to Thomas Frank’s squad ahead of the new season, where they will return to the Champions League. And Palhinha, the Portugal international who was previously on the books of Fulham, has emerged as a target.

Palhinha, 30, only joined Bayern last summer after seeing a transfer to the German giants collapse in dramatic fashion on deadline day 12 months earlier.

But he is now being touted for a return to the Premier League and Tottenham are seemingly interested in acquiring the defensive midfielder as part of their summer plans.
