Lachie Neale breaks silence as uncertainty grows over his AFL future
Brisbane Lions champion Lachie Neale has opened up about the biggest decision of his career, admitting he still has no clear answer about where he’ll be playing next season.
With interest building from clubs across several states, the dual Brownlow Medallist says every option remains on the table as he weighs football ambitions against what matters most away from the game.

“I genuinely don’t know” where next year will take him
Despite weeks of speculation linking him to a move interstate, Neale insists no decision has been made.
The 32-year-old revealed he is carefully considering every aspect of his future, from premiership opportunities and financial security to the realities of life after football.
Speaking after Brisbane’s victory over Geelong, Neale admitted he has yet to settle on the next chapter of his career.
He said he is approaching the decision with an open mind, acknowledging that with the latter stages of his playing career approaching, the choice carries enormous significance.
According to Neale, he is still uncertain about what path he will ultimately take.

Conversations with rival clubs are still to come
Rather than rushing into a commitment, Neale explained he plans to hold further meetings before making any final decision.
Those discussions won’t simply focus on football contracts but will also explore long-term opportunities once his playing days are over.
Importantly, Brisbane remains part of those conversations.
Neale confirmed he has continued speaking with senior figures at the Lions, making it clear the club is still firmly in the picture alongside rival suitors.
He described the situation as complicated but said he hopes the right outcome will become clearer over the coming weeks.
Brisbane remains close to his heart
While uncertainty surrounds his future, Neale stressed his commitment to the Lions has not changed.
He said his entire focus remains on helping Brisbane chase another AFL premiership this season and insisted there is every chance he could still be wearing Lions colours in 2026.
The veteran midfielder spoke warmly about the club, teammates and coaching staff, saying he continues to love playing in Brisbane despite the constant speculation surrounding his future.
Family continues to shape every decision
Away from football, Neale acknowledged that family remains at the centre of every conversation.
His two children, Piper and Freddie, currently live in Perth with his former wife, Jules, following the couple’s separation, while other close family members are spread across South Australia.
With loved ones living in different parts of the country, Neale admitted he must carefully consider whether moving closer to his children or extended family outweighs the benefits of remaining in Brisbane.
At the same time, he hasn’t ruled out staying where he is and continuing to make the current arrangement work.
AFL rivals continue to monitor the situation
As Neale delays his decision, interest from rival clubs continues to intensify.
Collingwood is widely viewed as one of the leading contenders for his signature, although St Kilda, Essendon, Adelaide and West Coast have also reportedly expressed interest in securing one of the competition’s premier midfielders.
The level of attention reflects Neale’s standing as one of the AFL’s most accomplished players and a footballer capable of making an immediate impact at a premiership contender.
One priority stands above everything else
Brisbane coach Chris Fagan has reportedly told Neale the club would love him to stay but would not stand in the way if he chooses a different path.
Behind the scenes, the midfielder is understood to be spending as much time as possible with his children whenever opportunities arise, knowing much of the AFL season keeps him away from them.
Earlier this year, Neale hinted that his final decision may ultimately have little to do with football.
While success, contracts and future planning all remain important, he made it clear there is one factor that outweighs everything else.
For Lachie Neale, family will always come first—and that may ultimately determine where the next chapter of his remarkable career begins.
