Kate Garraway has candidly spoken out about the struggles of single parenting after the tragic death of her husband, Derek Draper
In a heart-wrenching revelation, Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway detailed the challenges of single parenting since the tragic passing of her beloved husband, Derek Draper.
The TV presenter, 57, opened up to Daily Mail Weekend Magazine about the immense difficulty of raising their two children—Darcey, 19, and William, 15—alone.
“This is the hardest part of grieving. There are so many moments where I just think, ‘Derek, where are you?'” Kate divulged, expressing her torment over navigating parenthood without him. He passed away on January 3, 2024, after courageously fighting Covid-19 complications for nearly four years.
“It breaks my heart to say that my wonderful husband Derek has passed away,” said Kate as she shared her agony in an emotional social media tribute.
She noted how they used to parent instinctively together but now faces the daunting task alone, often questioning herself, “Now, I have to take on everything – the fun parent, the one keeping everyone on track, and the one panicking, yelling, ‘Oh my God, you’re going to fail everything!'” Despite self-doubt, she poignantly asked, “I make so many mistakes, but don’t we all? Is there really such a thing as a perfect mother?”

Ahead of the anniversary of her husband’s death, Kate opened up on Good Morning Britain about the staggering financial pressures she faced while Derek was in care. She shared her harrowing financial struggle, saying: “At the time of his passing, we had two unresolved appeals for funding, but they just kept getting delayed. I’m fortunate to have a well-paying job, but even with that, I had to cover all the costs myself.
“Now I’m left with an unmanageable amount of debt. If I’m in this position, how are other families supposed to cope?”, reports the Mirror.
