Roy Keane reveals âmatureâ Bruno Fernandes conversation as Man Utd legend admits remarks âdidnât come across properlyâ
ROY KEANE has revealed he buried the hatchet with Bruno Fernandes after the punditâs feud with the Manchester United legend.
Keane took issue with the playmaker after initially misquoting him following Unitedâs 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest last month.
The former Red Devil told The Overlap that Fernandes said he âprobably should have shot but I made them passesâ while chasing the Premier League assist record.
He added: âWow. How can your mindset of a footballer be going into a match to be about an individual record? He wonât be winning trophies, not with that mindset of the team.â
But Fernandes actually said: âThere were probably moments today when I should have passed instead of shot.â
The Portugal star later criticised Keane on the Diary of a CEO podcast and accused him of lying.
Fernandes said Keane âput words in my mouthâ, adding: âWhat I donât like is when people lie about things and [in] this case that you said about Roy Keane basically what he said is a lie.â
Keane ramped up their war of words as he posted a picture that said: âToo much attention makes a donkey think heâs a lionâ.
But he has now revealed the pair settled the feud over the phone and admitted his words âdidnât come across properlyâ.
Keane told the Overlap, via Sky Bet: âThere was a reaction to what we said after the podcast a few weeks ago, with what I said about Bruno Fernandes, and he reached out to me, wanted to chat, so I called him and we did have a lovely chat.
âWe had a chat about a bit of everything. When we do podcasts or games, sometimes you think you say something afterwards, youâre trying to communicate something that doesnât come across properly and people get upset.
âAnd he wanted to speak to me and we had a nice, mature conversation. It was a lovely chat.
âI like having boundaries with players as I donât want to speak to them every few weeks.
âBut every now and again, a player might reach out, so I think it was good that I spoke to Bruno because there was a lot reported and heâs a big player for United.
âI like the idea of communicating, having a proper conversation. I really enjoyed it and hopefully he did too.â
Fernandes, 31, did end up breaking the assist record, claiming the landmark with his 21st assist on the final day in Unitedâs 3-0 win over Brighton.
He leapfrogged Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne after their joint-efforts of 20 in the 2002-03 and 2019-20 campaign respectively.
It was arguably the FWA Player of the Yearâs best season in a United shirt as he also scored nine times and helped the team finish third.
The United skipper came close to leaving Old Trafford last summer amid links to Saudi Arabia.
He signed a new deal in 2024 that runs until next summer.
