BBC Children in Need viewers were left in floods of tears as Sara Cox opened up about the family tragedy that pushed her through one of the toughest challenges of her life.
In deeply emotional scenes from Wednesday’s behind-the-scenes recap, the Radio 2 star broke down while speaking about the sudden death of her beloved brother David, an Ironman athlete who died unexpectedly in 2019 at the age of 56. Sara admitted the loss “completely destroyed” her family and still shapes everything she does today.

She recalled, “My brother David died really suddenly in 2019, and it completely destroyed all the family, like it came out of nowhere. He was proper – a real athlete who ran countless Ironman competitions. I don’t think he’d believe I’m doing this. I think he’d be super proud. I’m hoping I’ve just got a bit of strength from him today.”
The heartbreaking confession aired during the documentary following her astonishing 135-mile Great Northern Marathon Challenge — five marathons in five days — running from Kielder Forest to Pudsey in brutal conditions, through shin-splitting pain and moments where sheer exhaustion nearly stopped her in her tracks.

Sara also dedicated her run to children living with mobility issues, saying she wanted them to feel seen and supported. “This is for all the children who walk funny or have wonky legs and get picked on, like I did in school.”
Viewers were overwhelmed as the programme showed crowds gathering across Northumberland, Durham, North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire, cheering her on with homemade banners and Pudsey bears. Emotional fans left messages on social media within minutes of the broadcast. “Fourteen minutes in and already bawling. Sara Cox: Every Step Of The Way. Amazing lady,” one person wrote.

Another added: “I’ve always admired Sara Cox. But this is simply incredible.” A third said, “Crying again. What an absolute legend.” Someone else shared, “Can’t stop crying… so proud of Sara Cox.”
Sara’s journey was supported by Olympian Greg Whyte, on-call physios and an unwavering support crew. The documentary also showed her receiving uplifting messages from celebrity supporters including Prince William, Mel C, Dame Judi Dench, Ant & Dec and Rod Stewart.
When she finally reached the finish line in Pudsey, she was met with a roaring crowd, a live performance from Mel C and even a special display from the Red Arrows. By the end of the challenge, she had raised more than £9.5 million for Children in Need — a moment that left viewers, and Sara herself, overcome with emotion.
