Fer-get itÂ
âDonkey thinks heâs a lionâ â Man Utd legend Roy Keane appears to ramp up Bruno Fernandes feud after âliesâ interview
ROY KEANE appears to have ramped up his war or words with Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes with a thinly-veiled dig on his Instagram.
It comes after Red Devils skipper Fernandes ripped into Old Trafford great Keane on Monday for peddling âunacceptable liesâ about him.
Fernandes broke the Premier League assists record when he notched his 21st of the campaign in Unitedâs season finale against Brighton on Sunday.
But he wasnât happy that Keane, 54, had accused him of prioritising his individual glory over the team earlier this month.
And the Portuguese playmaker, 31, attempted to set the record straight during an appearance on The Diary of a CEO podcast.
He told podcast host Steven Bartlett: âWhat I donât like is when people lie about things. Iâve always taken criticism from everyone and anyone, and I never replied to anything whatsoever.
âPeople have an opinion, they think itâs good, bad, whatever. And, in this case, what Roy Keane said is a lie. Luckily for me, everything is recorded.
âImagine if it wasnât. People will think, âBruno is the guy always trying to get the assistâ. I accept his criticism, I accept that he might like me as a player or not, like me as a person or not.
âBut what I donât like is that he puts words in my mouth that have not been said, thatâs the only thing I donât like.â
He also revealed he had reached out to former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to get Keaneâs number and discuss the incident in private.
However, after Fernandesâ comments made headlines, Keane was quick to take the clash back into the public sphere.
The former United captain took to Instagram on bank holiday Monday to post a picture of a donkey in the spotlight on a stage, with two lions cast in shadows.
Keaneâs story post to his 2.5 million followers was captioned: âToo much attention makes a donkey think heâs a lion.â
Speaking on The Overlap earlier this month, Keane had said: âAfter the game he [Fernandes] got interviewed and the captain of Manchester United said: âA few times, I probably should have shot but I made the passesâ. Wow.
âHow can your mindset be not to win the match but be about an individual record?
âHe wonât be winning trophies, not with that mindset of the team. Theyâre giving up two goals and everyoneâs getting all giddy because heâs equalled the record for assists. Itâs mind-boggling. Itâs a circus act.â
It appears Keane had actually misinterpreted Fernandesâ comments.
Fernandes had, in fact, said: âThere were probably moments today when I should have passed instead of shot. Iâm very happy for the assist, but more than that, Iâm happy for the win and to finish the season on a high.â
Keane, alongside members of the Class of â92 including Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt, has been a particularly vocal critic of United in recent years.
Fernandes is not the first United player to hit back at criticism from the clubâs former stars this season.
Lisandro Martinez hit back at Scholes and Butt in January, claiming pundits never have the nerve to repeat criticism face to face after the pair mocked the defenderâs size in relation to Erling Haaland before Unitedâs 2-0 derby win.
On his attempt to squash his beef with Keane, Fernandes added on podcast: âIâve never ever had something to say, Iâve never said something wrong.
âI even asked Ole [for] his number to text him to be honest, to have a word with him to say that I donât mind the criticism [but] I donât like when people lie about things that I say.
âIt goes a little bit over the top of the things that I think are acceptable. I accept criticism. I accept that he can say things that I donât like and I donât like to see it.
âBut, as I said before, that improves me. What I donât like is that people make their own words on what I say and itâs not true.
âObviously Iâve always showed a lot of respect for Roy Keane and for everything heâs done for the club and for everything heâs always said.â
