TRAGEDY unfolded in Brighton yesterday after three bodies were pulled from the water – with cops now probing how their deaths happened.
Searchers discovered the bodies of three young women close to the Marina in the early hours.
Details about what happened before that are scant, but what we do know is that cops were first called at 5.45am over concerns for one woman in the sea.
At some point, two more women had also entered the water.
Detectives are understood to be probing whether the women entered the choppy 12C water close to where they were found before getting into difficulty.
The discovery of handbags and coats left abandoned on the shore suggests they took them off before getting into the water.
What they did before going into the sea remains a mystery.
Locals told The Sun the women had been dressed in “going-out clothes” and may have been partying near the seafront in the hours before the tragedy.
A cluster of beachfront nightclubs are a 1.5mile walk west along Brighton‘s waterfront.
But the Marina is also near some smaller pubs and bars and residential housing.
What may have started as a big night of fun, ended in a devastating night of horror.
Sources said they are believed to have been in their late teens or early 20s.
The alarm sparked a huge emergency response along the seafront.
After the sad discovery of the three bodies, officers then began investigating the circumstances leading to their deaths.
One local, who had been feeding birds near the scene at around 6am, told The Sun: “It was extremely windy, cold and choppy in the water.
“I’m not sure why anyone would have been in the sea. What’s happened is awful.”
Another added: “It’s absolutely tragic.
“I heard they were found close to the shore and pulled out but nothing could be done to save them.
“There were loads of ambulances and police here from very early.
“It is very, very windy and there is a strong current that pushes people east from the pier.”

Brighton Beach: New theory on how 3 women died – ‘hidden drop in sea’
A source has revealed a new likely explanation behind the tragedy in Brighton.
A new theory has emerged following Wednesday’s horrific discovery of the bodies of three women on Brighton beach. Earlier on Thursday (May 14), Sussex Police confirmed the formal identification process of the three young women is underway.
A source from the coastguard service now suggests it is possible the women may have misjudged the depth to which the beach can suddenly drop. The pebbled beach around central Brighton and the Palace Pier is notorious for having steep slopes, which swimmers are continuously warned can be incredibly dangerous. “It’s feared at least one of the women went into the water for a paddle and was then suddenly dragged into danger after misjudging the shingle shelf,” a Coastguard source has said. “If you took one pace out thinking it’s flat you could go down two feet or more very quickly.

“That can turn things very dangerous very quickly,” the source added, according to The Sun.
Emergency services – including a dozen police officers, vans and cars as well as the HM Coastguard Search and Rescue officers – rushed to the seafront just before 6am on Wednesday (May 13) after concerns for the welfare of a “single person” in the water close to a car park on Madeira Drive. When they arrived, two more bodies were recovered from the sea nearby.
Sussex Police has said formal identification procedures are underway, but will not name the women until this process is complete. The three young women’s next of kin have been informed and their loved ones are being supported by specialist officers, the force added.

Ch Supt Adam Hays called the events an ‘utterly heartbreaking tragedy’ (Image: Adam Gerrard / Daily Mirror)
Chief Superintendent Adam Hays said on Thursday: “This is an utterly heartbreaking tragedy, and my thoughts are with the loved ones of these three young women after their devastating loss.
“They will remain at the forefront of our minds as we search for the answers their families, and the wider public, desperately seek. This is a sensitive investigation that includes a number of hypotheses, and it would not be appropriate to speculate as we to continue to gather evidence.
“I would once again ask for the public’s patience while we establish the full facts, which will be shared publicly as soon as we are able.
“Anyone with information that could help is asked to contact police online or via 101, quoting Operation Ledmore.”
Sussex Police believe there is no evidence to suggest third-party involvement or criminality.
