Simon Cowell has confessed he was ‘horrible’ to Susan Boyle when she competed on Britain’s Got Talent back in 2009. It has been nearly twenty years since unlikely superstar Susan Boyle took to the stage when was greeted with a not-so-nice reception.

Susan, now 65, performed in front of the crowd and panellists Amanda Holden, Piers Morgan and head judge Simon, who couldn’t conceal their reactions. During a frank chat on Tales From The Celebrity Trenches podcast, Simon acknowledged the response from the three judges was “awful and horrible.”

He said: “I look back and I just think: ‘My God we look so awful, horrible.’ I actually don’t think we look bad enough. I think we were even worse than that and they went: ‘You look awful’ and I said: ‘We are awful!’ All of us,” reports the Mirror.

Simon admitted the panellists “looked awful” in the audition footage

“I mean that look that Piers gives me, I think out of all the looks I’ve ever remembered that might be the worst. I was just as bad.”

The music mogul acknowledges that he had the power to edit his harsh response from the episode but believed it served as a reality check for him and the other judges: “You can’t judge a book by its cover.”

During her audition, Susan explained that her lifelong dream was to follow in the footsteps of musical theatre star Elaine Page. Confessing that she had misjudged Susan, Amanda said at the time: “I am so thrilled because I knew everyone was against you. I honestly think we were all being really cynical and I think that’s the biggest wake up call ever. I just want to say it was a complete privilege listening to that.”

The audience, seated in front of the stage, appears to be actively engaged, with some individuals clapping and others standing in response to the performance.

While on the podcast Simon went on to say: “We do look disgusting but you have to hold your hands up at that moment and go: ‘A lot of people are going to realise in about 24 hours that we are just horrible’.”

The response from the panel and audience certainly wasn’t lost on Susan either. In a chat with the Irish Mirror, she said that she was made to feel like a ‘circus freak’ during her audition: “It felt quite suffocating, almost as though I was an act in a freak show, and that hurt.”

Susan was beaten by dance troupe Diversity who claimed victory in the third series of the ITV programme, however the defeat did nothing to derail her career. She has since sold 23 million albums, secured UK and American chart-toppers and earned her place in the Guinness World Records.
