Bonnie Tyler has been “resuscitated after going into cardiac arrest” when doctors attempted to bring her out of an induced coma at a hospital in Portugal. It comes as the legendary singer continues to struggle with a horrific infection following emergency surgery.

The crisis resulted in the deterioration of the 74-year-old’s condition late last week after life-saving surgery for a ruptured appendix. The Welsh singing legend will continue in the induced coma within an intensive care unit at Faro Hospital until medical staff succeed in controlling the “serious infection” she is battling caused by a perforated intestine, local media has said.

Her longtime friend Liberto Mealha revealed overnight that doctors remain “positive” she can recover completely despite the ongoing uncertainty over how the situation will develop. Further details have also emerged regarding Bonnie’s health struggles, which resulted in her emergency bowel surgery and appendix removal.

Mr Mealha first met The Total Eclipse of the Heart star when he launched a well-known Albufeira nightclub in the 80s close to the artist’s holiday home, according to the Mirror. He explained last week: “She started feeling unwell during a concert in London and went to a doctor for tests, but they didn’t detect anything there.”

“She decided to travel to the Algarve, where she began to feel severe abdominal pain. Two days later, she went to a private hospital, which urgently transferred her to the hospital in Faro because her appendix had burst and she needed emergency surgery.”

It was reported overnight that Bonnie, who is thought to have first started feeling unwell around a month ago, had been bedridden for two days at her Portuguese home before her husband Robert Sullivan took her to the private hospital she was initially seen at before being moved to Faro.

A representative for the singer stated late last Thursday that Bonnie had been placed in the coma to “aid her recovery” following reports she had suffered a burst appendix. A day earlier, when news of her health issues first surfaced, the spokesperson had said: “We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery.

“The surgery went well and she is now recuperating. We know that all of her family, friends and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”

Bonnie, who has enjoyed numerous Top 10 hits throughout her extensive career and represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, is believed to have been rushed to hospital on April 30. She was reportedly “stable” in an intermediate care unit at Faro Hospital before a deterioration in her health led to her being transferred to intensive care.

Sources reveal she had been continuing her commitments before her hospitalisation despite experiencing pain for several weeks. Her representatives have yet to respond to reports that she required resuscitation last week following the cardiac arrest.

Mr Mealha, whose daughter is Bonnie’s goddaughter, revealed last week that the singer’s husband was spending his days at her hospital bedside, only departing to sleep at home during the night. He added: “He’s very grateful to the doctors and nurses at the Faro hospital and believes that if Bonnie had stayed in the United Kingdom she would no longer be here.”
