Star makes heroic return after years out in Roosters’ thrilling win over Broncos

The breathtaking moment left many NRL fans in disbelief as they poured in with their reactions on social media.

Sydney Roosters fans were on cloud nine on Saturday night… and not just because they held off a spirited Broncos fightback to clinch a huge win.

The NRL side had already raced into a 12-0 lead over the premiers when a not-so-familiar star returned to the fold.

Cody Ramsey was a promising young winger when he broke through for the Dragons six years ago.

But his last NRL match came back in 2022 after he was ruled out of the 2023 and 2024 seasons due to ulcerative colitis.

He returned in 2025 for a trial game against the Roosters, before featuring in a 30-12 defeat to the Warriors in the NSW Cup Grand Final back in September.

But the 38-24 win over the Broncos on Saturday was his long-awaited NRL comeback after nearly four years away.

He entered the fray at the Allianz Stadium after 27 minutes and was greeted with a warm reception from the home crowd as the Roosters earned a 30-0 half-time lead.

Social media also reacted hugely positively to Ramsey, with NRL physio saying: “Amazing to see Cody Ramsey back in the NRL!

“One of the best stories that will come out of this season – Ramsey’s first NRL game since Round 25 2022. Didn’t play footy at all in 2023 or 2024 due to ulcerative colitis.

“Inspirational seeing him back at the top level!”

Corey Ryan added: “Massive moment for Cody Ramsey tonight. Go well king.”

Deep Longstop responded: “That’s pretty cool for Cody Ramsey. Welcome back lad.”

While League Unlimited said: “Fantastic moment with Cody Ramsey taking the field in the NRL for the first time since his return from an ulcerative colitis setback.”

By contrast, it was a nightmare evening for the defending champions as the Broncos suffered multiple injury setbacks.

Winger Josiah Karapani came off with a foot injury and was replaced by Deine Mariner — who made way in the first half with a cork.

Roosters prop Lindsay Collins was forced off early in the first half and failed his head injury assessment following a clash of heads that will keep him out of next week’s game against the Titans.

Teammate Mark Nawaqanitawase is also long odds to make the trip to Gosford after he was forced off with an ankle injury, while Blues veteran Angus Crichton failed to finish the contest and had an ice pack on his knee.
