Laura Tingle Shares Emotional Tribute as Poignant Detail About Sam Neill’s Health in the Weeks Before His Pɑ:ssing Emerges

Sam Neill Had Pneumonia Before His Sudden Death as Former Partner Reveals He Was ‘Pretty Sick’ for Two Weeks

Sam Neill had reportedly been battling pneumonia and was seriously unwell during the final two weeks of his life, although his family has not officially confirmed the illness as his cause of death.

The beloved Jurassic Park actor passed away in Sydney on Monday, July 13, at the age of 78, surrounded by his family.

His death was described by loved ones as “sudden and unexpected”, coming only months after medical tests confirmed that he was cancer-free following a long and demanding treatment journey.

Rima Te Wiata, Neill’s longtime friend and Hunt for the Wilderpeople co-star, revealed that the actor had developed pneumonia after finally overcoming his blood cancer.

She reflected that Neill would probably have been frustrated to become seriously ill again so soon after receiving such encouraging news about his recovery.

Te Wiata also recalled Neill’s previous remarks that he was not frightened of death but would feel annoyed by the interruption it caused to a life he still deeply valued.

While her comments suggest pneumonia may have played a role in his final decline, no formal medical cause of death has yet been released.

Laura Tingle Reveals He Was ‘Pretty Sick’

His former girlfriend, ABC political journalist Laura Tingle, revealed Neill had been 'pretty sick' during the weeks prior to his death

Neill’s former partner, ABC political journalist Laura Tingle, also shared that the actor had been increasingly unwell in the two weeks before he passed away.

Speaking to ABC Radio Sydney, Tingle explained that those closest to him had continued hoping he would recover, but his illness ultimately became too difficult to overcome.

She said the years of chemotherapy and immunotherapy that successfully cleared his cancer had also left his immune system severely weakened.

Neill had undergone extensive treatment after being diagnosed in 2022 with stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer.

After conventional chemotherapy stopped working, he received CAR T-cell therapy, an advanced treatment that modifies a patient’s immune cells so they can identify and attack cancer.

Tests conducted in April reportedly found no remaining signs of the cancer. At the time, Neill spoke with enormous excitement about the result and described the medical breakthrough as extraordinary.

'He'd had a lot of chemo and a lot of immunotherapy and, thankfully, it finally cleared him of the blood cancer that he had, but that left him pretty compromised in terms of his immune system,' she said.

Family Confirms His Death Was Sudden

Neill’s family announced his passing in an emotional statement shared through his official Instagram account.

They confirmed that he died in Sydney with his loved ones beside him and said he maintained the dignity that had characterised his life and career.

The family emphasised that Neill remained cancer-free at the time of his passing and thanked the medical team at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for the care they provided.

They have asked for privacy while grieving and indicated that further details may be shared at a later time.

Until then, reports that pneumonia caused his death should be treated cautiously. The illness was present before he passed away, but it has not been formally identified by his family as the official cause.

Laura Tingle Shares a Private Tribute

Hours after the news became public, Tingle shared a deeply personal tribute to the actor, writing: “Sweet dreams, darling Sam.”

Her post featured a collection of previously unseen photographs and videos from their private relationship, which lasted from 2018 until 2021.

The images offered a warm glimpse of Neill away from Hollywood. They showed the pair travelling, spending time by the sea, visiting his New Zealand winery and enjoying ordinary moments at home.

Neill could be seen cooking, ironing, playing guitar and caring for animals, including chickens, a cat and a pet pig.

The tribute also captured dinners, theatre visits, overseas holidays and relaxed gatherings with friends, including fellow Australian actor Bryan Brown.

Although Neill and Tingle eventually separated, they remained close. Neill later described their three years together with gratitude and affection.

A Life Marked by Love, Regret and Gratitude

In his 2023 memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, Neill reflected openly on his relationships and the people who had supported him throughout his life.

He admitted that his cancer treatment had sometimes left him wishing for greater companionship, while also expressing gratitude for the women who had been important to him.

Neill was previously married to New Zealand actress Lisa Harrow. Their marriage ended in the late 1980s.

He later married Japanese makeup artist Noriko Watanabe in 1989, with the couple separating in 2017.

Remembered Around the World

Neill became an international star after portraying palaeontologist Dr Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park.

He returned to the franchise in Jurassic Park III in 2001 and again in Jurassic World Dominion in 2022.

His extensive career also included memorable roles in Peaky Blinders, The Tudors, The Twelve and The Simpsons.

For many Australian viewers, one of his most cherished performances was as scientist Cliff “Mitch” Mitchell in the acclaimed historical comedy-drama The Dish.

Neill had also completed work on upcoming projects including Godzilla x Kong: Supernova and The Last Resort, which are expected to be released posthumously in 2027.

As tributes continue to arrive from across Australia, New Zealand and the wider film industry, questions remain about the precise circumstances surrounding his passing.

What is known is that Neill had been seriously unwell with pneumonia, while his immune system remained vulnerable after years of intensive cancer treatment. Whether pneumonia will ultimately be confirmed as the direct cause of his death has not yet been established.
