Mel Schilling’s Husband Shares Moving Wedding Anniversary Tribute Months After Her Passing

Mel Schilling’s husband, Gareth Brisbane, has honoured his late wife with a deeply emotional tribute on what would have been their eighth wedding anniversary.

Posting through the beloved Married At First Sight expert’s Instagram account, Gareth shared a joyful photograph from their wedding day — a treasured moment now carrying an even more profound meaning for the family.

A Treasured Memory From Their Wedding Day

The photograph captured Mel and Gareth kissing beneath a shower of pink and white confetti during their wedding celebrations.

Their daughter Madison was also part of the precious scene, wearing a white tulle flower-girl dress as Gareth held her in his arms.

Although the image appeared on Mel’s Instagram page, it was posted by Gareth, who has continued using the account to celebrate his wife’s life and preserve special family memories following her passing in March.

The anniversary tribute quickly received an outpouring of love from Mel’s friends, television colleagues and devoted followers.

Fellow MAFS relationship expert Alessandra Rampolla sent love to the family, while long-time co-star John Aiken described the photograph as “simply beautiful”.

Former and current participants from the reality series also responded with messages and symbols of support.

One follower, who said they were living with stage-four brain cancer, shared how much Mel’s courage had inspired them. Others sent strength and love to Gareth and Madison as they faced the deeply emotional milestone.

MAFS Viewers Moved by On-Air Farewell

Gareth’s wedding anniversary post came only days after Married At First Sight Australia honoured Mel with an emotional tribute during the program.

Viewers had tuned in expecting the show’s usual confrontations and relationship drama. Instead, the episode concluded with a moving montage celebrating Mel’s personality, career and memorable years on the series.

The tribute featured some of her most recognisable moments alongside fellow experts John Aiken and Alessandra Rampolla.

Many viewers admitted the unexpected farewell left them in tears, with fans saying the program would never feel quite the same without Mel’s warmth, wisdom and unmistakable presence.

Mel’s Courageous Cancer Journey

Mel passed away in March at the age of 54, shortly after revealing that her cancer had spread to her brain.

The Australian psychologist and relationship expert was initially diagnosed with colon cancer in 2023 after doctors discovered a tumour she described as being approximately the size of a lemon.

Following surgery, Mel announced that she had received encouraging results. She remained committed to her work on Married At First Sight, continuing to film while undergoing treatment.

However, she later revealed that the cancer had spread to her lungs in February 2024. It subsequently reached her brain over Christmas 2025.

Despite the physical and emotional challenges of her treatment, Mel continued appearing on the program and sharing messages of courage with her audience.

Gareth Revealed Mel’s Final Thoughts Were for Her Family

Although the post appeared on Mel’s Instagram page, it was shared by Gareth, who has continued using the account to honour his late wife following her death from cancer in March

After Mel’s passing, Gareth announced the news in a deeply personal statement, revealing that her final thoughts were focused entirely on him and Madison.

He explained that when he believed the illness had taken away her ability to speak, Mel called him closer and quietly shared a message for her husband and daughter.

According to Gareth, the gesture required almost all of her remaining strength and perfectly reflected the compassion and devotion she had shown throughout her life.

He remembered Mel not only as a respected television personality but also as an extraordinary mother, role model and soulmate.

While millions of viewers knew her as the strong and compassionate matriarch of Married At First Sight, Gareth said that to him and Madison, she would always be their beloved “wee Melsie”.

Keeping Mel’s Memory Alive

Since her passing, Gareth has continued sharing photographs, memories and important milestones through Mel’s Instagram account.

Each post has offered followers another glimpse into the woman behind the television personality — a devoted mother and wife whose influence extended far beyond the MAFS experiment.

The eighth-anniversary photograph was originally captured during one of the happiest days of their lives. Years later, it has become a poignant reminder of the love Mel, Gareth and Madison shared as a family.

Nine has not yet announced who will permanently succeed Mel as a relationship expert on Married At First Sight Australia.
