Roy Keane has paid tribute to his mother Marie after she passed away following a long battle with illness. It was confirmed on Friday that Marie had ‘passed away peacefully’ while ‘surrounded by loved ones’ at Marymount University Hospital in Cork.

Manchester United legend Keane was close to Marie. He was supposed to be working for ITV as a pundit for England’s friendly against Uruguay on Friday at Wembley, but was absent due to the sad news.

He has now shared a photo of Marie on his Instagram account. The caption simply reads: “You’ll always be the boss”. It has a similar theme to a post from 2022 which read: “The Only Boss I listen to.”

Keane received a replies from his ex-United team-mates Gary Neville and David Beckham, who both posted heart emojis. There were also supportive responses from legendary runner Sir Mo Farah, and fellow ex-professional players Robbie Keane and Anton Ferdinand.

Marie was a mother of five and a notice announcing her death said she would be “sadly missed by her loving family, sisters Ina, Annette and Josephine, brothers Jack, Leo, Michael and Noel, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law Linda, Theresa and Mary, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, her great neighbours and friends.”

Marie lost her husband Mossie at the age of 79 in August 2019, the year after he had suffered a stroke.

A visitation will take place at a Cork funeral home on Monday before mass at the Church of the Resurrection on Tuesday and a burial following at St Catherine’s Cemetery in Kilcully, Co Cork.

Speaking on ITV on Friday night before England’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay, presenter Mark Pougatch took a moment to send his best wishes to Keane.

He said: “Everyone here and all of us at ITV sends our condolences to Roy and his family on the sad passing of his mother Marie. All of our thoughts are with the Keane family this evening.”

Rockmount AFC, Keane’s schoolboy club in Cork, were among the first to offer their condolences. They said: “Sincere condolences extended to Keane and Lynch family on the passing of Marie.”
