Australia has bid a final farewell to legendary broadcaster, journalist and former senator Derryn Hinch, with an emotional state funeral celebrating a life that left an unmistakable mark on the nation’s media and political landscape.
Among the many tributes, it was a heartfelt message from his former wife, acclaimed actress Jacki Weaver, that became one of the day’s most poignant moments.
‘I Loved You From the Very Start to the Very End’
Unable to attend in person because she is filming in Western Australia’s Goldfields, Weaver delivered a pre-recorded tribute that reflected on a relationship which, despite ending years ago, remained deeply meaningful.
She remembered Hinch not only as a devoted partner during their marriage, but also as a loving stepfather to her son, Dylan.
The actress revealed the pair had stayed “very close” long after their separation, adding that Hinch had even sent her a text message on the night he died.
Ending her tribute, she delivered words that left many mourners visibly moved.
“I love you… I’ve loved you from the very start to the very end.”
She closed simply:
“Goodnight, sweet dreams.”

The service was held on Monday at The Timber Yard in Port Melbourne, drawing some of Australia’s most recognisable media figures and entertainers.
Veteran broadcaster Ray Martin, longtime radio personality Denis Walter, performers Rhonda Burchmore and Greg Evans, along with many friends and colleagues, gathered to honour the man affectionately known as the “Human Headline.”
Rather than a traditional religious ceremony, the farewell reflected Hinch’s lifelong atheism.
His coffin was draped in the Australian flag and surrounded by red roses, symbolising love, respect, courage and enduring affection.
Music included the Australian national anthem and Joe Cocker’s You Are So Beautiful.
Remembering the Man Behind the Headlines
During his tribute, Ray Martin reflected on Hinch’s larger-than-life personality, describing him as fearless, outspoken and impossible to ignore.
He recalled a man whose booming voice and uncompromising opinions made him one of Australia’s most recognisable broadcasters, while also remembering a friend whose warmth often surprised those who only knew his public persona.
A Legacy That Reached Beyond Broadcasting
Born in New Zealand before building his career in Australia, Hinch became one of the country’s best-known radio hosts and journalists before later entering federal politics.
As founder of Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party, he served as a Victorian senator between 2016 and 2019, campaigning for justice reforms, stronger protections for children and tougher laws for serious offenders.
Following his passing on 10 July, tributes poured in from across Australia’s political and media communities.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese remembered Hinch as someone who lived “a life rich in colour and free from fear,” while the Victorian Government praised his unwavering determination to speak up for those without a voice.
