The Heartbreaking Letter Sam Neill Wrote for His Children — The Words He Hoped They Would Always Remember
Long before the world began mourning beloved actor Sam Neill, the Jurassic Park star quietly prepared for a future he feared he might not live to see.
After being diagnosed with stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of non-Hodgkin blood cancer, Neill made one of the most emotional decisions of his life: to write a letter for his children and grandchildren—a deeply personal message he hoped they would always have if he was no longer there.

“I Didn’t Know How Long I Had Left”
Speaking candidly about his cancer battle, Neill revealed the diagnosis forced him to confront the possibility that his time with his family could be cut short.
Unsure how much longer he had, he decided to leave behind something far more meaningful than fame or success—a written account of who he was, the life he had lived and the values he hoped would stay with his family forever.
Reflecting on that difficult decision, Neill said:
“I didn’t know really how long I had to live. And I thought, yeah, I should probably write something down for my children and my grandchildren because I may not be here in a couple of months and it would be good for them to have a sense of me and some of the things that I’ve done.”
The letter became far more than a collection of memories. It was a father’s way of making sure his son Tim, daughter Elena, and his grandchildren would always know the man behind the public persona—his joys, his regrets, the lessons he had learned, and above all, the love he carried for them.

A Diagnosis That Changed Everything
Neill’s cancer journey began after he returned to New Zealand following years of pandemic travel restrictions.
What should have been a joyful reunion with family quickly became devastating when doctors confirmed he had an aggressive form of blood cancer.
He later described those early days as “a fight for my life.”
The actor underwent months of intensive chemotherapy, but the treatment proved unsuccessful.
His son, Tim, later recalled the heartbreak of seeing his father during chemotherapy, saying he was shocked by how frail he had become after the brutal treatment.

Finding Hope When Chemotherapy Failed
When conventional treatment stopped working, doctors placed Neill on an experimental anti-cancer drug.
The medication successfully pushed his cancer into remission, giving him precious extra time with his family and allowing him to continue doing what he loved.
Even so, doctors warned him that one day the drug would eventually stop working.
Neill accepted that reality with remarkable grace.
“I’m not in any way frightened of dying. That doesn’t worry me… I’d be annoyed because there are things I still want to do. Very irritating, dying. But I’m not afraid of it.”
Rather than dwelling on what he could not control, he chose to focus on making the most of every day he had.
The Memoir That Became a Lifeline
Unable to work while receiving treatment, Neill began writing what would become his memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?
What started as a simple way to pass the time soon became something much more significant.
The Oscar-nominated actor later admitted that writing gave him purpose during the darkest chapter of his life.
Each evening he would think about the story he wanted to write the next day, finding comfort in having something to look forward to.
He even described the book as a “lifesaver”—a project that helped carry him through the uncertainty of cancer.
A Legacy Beyond Hollywood
To millions around the world, Sam Neill will always be remembered as the fearless Dr Alan Grant from Jurassic Park.
But to those closest to him, his greatest legacy was never found on a movie screen.
It lives in the heartfelt letter he wrote for his children and grandchildren—a timeless reminder of a devoted father who wanted his family to know not just what he achieved, but who he truly was.
Today, those words carry even greater weight.
They stand as a powerful testament to Neill’s courage, humility and unwavering love for his family—a final gift from a man who faced life’s greatest challenge with honesty, humour and extraordinary grace.
