“I didn’t know really how long I had to live. And I thought, yeah, I should probably write something down for my children and my grandchildren because I may not be here in a couple of months and it would be good for them to have a sense of me and some of the things that I’ve done.”

“I’m not in any way frightened of dying. That doesn’t worry me… I’d be annoyed because there are things I still want to do. Very irritating, dying. But I’m not afraid of it.”

Unable to work while receiving treatment, Neill began writing what would become his memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?

What started as a simple way to pass the time soon became something much more significant.

The Oscar-nominated actor later admitted that writing gave him purpose during the darkest chapter of his life.

Each evening he would think about the story he wanted to write the next day, finding comfort in having something to look forward to.

He even described the book as a “lifesaver”—a project that helped carry him through the uncertainty of cancer.
