The funeral plans for beloved actor Sam Neill have been revealed following his sudden death on Monday at the age of 78.
The Jurassic Park star will be laid to rest in a private ceremony in New Zealand, with only close family members and friends expected to attend. According to reports, there will be no public memorial service, as his family has chosen to keep the farewell intimate during their time of grief.

Private Funeral to Be Held in New Zealand
Sources told TMZ that Neill’s funeral will be a low-key event reserved exclusively for those closest to him.
The actor died on Monday at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney. His family later confirmed the heartbreaking news through a statement shared on his official Instagram account.
They described his passing as “sudden and unexpected,” while noting he was surrounded by loved ones in his final moments.
“It is with immense sadness that the whānau (family) of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13 July, in Sydney, Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.”
Family Says He Had Been Cancer-Free
In the same statement, Neill’s family revealed that, despite the unexpected nature of his death, he had remained free of cancer after years of battling blood cancer.
“The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer-free.”
They also expressed heartfelt thanks to the medical staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for the care they provided.
The family added that further details would be shared in due course while asking for privacy as they mourn.
Hollywood Pays Tribute to the Jurassic Park Legend
Following news of Neill’s passing, tributes poured in from across the entertainment industry.
His longtime friend and Jurassic Park co-star Laura Dern, who portrayed Dr. Ellie Sattler opposite Neill’s Dr. Alan Grant, remembered him as both a treasured colleague and lifelong friend.
“Sam was my beloved lifetime friend. He showed me the depths of loyalty, protectiveness and love, always with the driest of wit.”
She added that he was “a true and noble gentleman” and concluded her tribute by saying:
“I will love you forever, Dr. Alan Grant.”
Steven Spielberg Remembers an “Exceptionally Collaborative” Actor
Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg also paid tribute, reflecting on Neill’s enduring contribution to the iconic franchise.
Spielberg said he was grateful to the filmmakers who first recognised Neill’s talent, ultimately leading to his casting as Dr. Alan Grant.
He praised Neill as “exceptionally collaborative” and recalled that, despite portraying a character who initially disliked children, the actor himself was a devoted father.

“I adored making all the Jurassic movies with him.”
Spielberg added that Neill would always remain part of the Jurassic Park family and would never be forgotten by either his colleagues or millions of fans around the world.
His Battle With Blood Cancer
Neill had spoken openly about his health in recent years after being diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer.
Earlier this year, he revealed that medical tests showed he was cancer-free following advanced treatment.
Speaking to Australia’s Channel Seven, the actor recalled how chemotherapy had initially kept him alive before eventually losing its effectiveness.
“The chemo stopped working. I was at a loss and it looked like I was on the way out.”
He later underwent CAR T-cell therapy, an advanced treatment that genetically modifies a patient’s immune cells to target and destroy cancer cells.
The therapy reportedly extended his life after conventional treatment failed, and Neill publicly shared his gratitude after achieving remission.

A Lasting Legacy
Best known for portraying Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, Sam Neill enjoyed a career spanning more than five decades across film and television.
As family and friends prepare to say their final goodbye in a private ceremony, tributes continue to celebrate an actor whose performances, warmth and generosity left a lasting mark on audiences around the world.
