Sarah Abo Confirms Sudden Today Show Exit as Doctors Order Rest During Pregnancy

Sarah Abo has explained why she quietly stepped away from the Today show earlier than expected, confirming that health concerns during her pregnancy mean she will not return for an official on-air farewell.
The 39-year-old presenter, who is expecting her first child with husband Cyrus Moran, has been absent from the breakfast program since signing off last week.
In an Instagram update shared on Wednesday, Abo revealed that she had been receiving hospital care after unexpectedly developing high blood pressure.
Doctors Order Sarah Abo to Rest

Sharing photographs from hospital, the journalist said the health complication had taken her by surprise.
“Copped a bit of a curveball last week with high blood pressure and have been in and out of hospital since,” she wrote.
Abo reassured her followers that both she and her unborn baby were doing well under the care of doctors, nurses and midwives.
“Thankfully I’m in the safe hands of magnificent doctors, nurses and midwives taking incredibly good care of bub and me and we are both well,” she added.
However, medical staff have instructed her to rest while they continue monitoring her condition, ending any hope of returning to the studio for a proper farewell before beginning maternity leave.
An Unexpectedly Quiet Departure
Earlier on Wednesday, stand-in hosts Sylvia Jeffreys and Charles Croucher confirmed that Abo would not be returning to the program.
Croucher explained that the team had hoped to welcome her back for one final appearance, but her doctors had advised against it.
“We were looking forward to saying goodbye to her, but doctors’ orders mean that that’s not possible right now,” he said.
Jeffreys told viewers that Abo had been reading the many supportive messages sent to her over recent weeks and deeply appreciated the public’s kindness.
The abrupt departure means one of Today’s most recognisable presenters has left the show without the traditional on-air send-off viewers may have expected.
Abo Thanks Viewers for Their Support
In her personal message, Abo said she had been overwhelmed by the cards, gifts and warm wishes sent to her growing family.
“I seriously pinch myself when I think about how many good people there are out there. So special,” she wrote.
She also thanked those who had sent presents for her unborn son, explaining that it could take longer than expected to respond personally while she focuses on her health.
“Just know how incredibly grateful I am,” she said.
Abo reserved special praise for her husband, describing Moran as her “rock” throughout the difficult and uncertain period.
“Shout out to my rock who has not left my side,” she wrote, before joking: “Harry Kane or Lionel Messi ain’t got nothing on this guy!”
She concluded her update by encouraging others to take their wellbeing seriously.
“A reminder to make sure you look after yourself — pregnant or not!”
More Uncertainty for the Today Show
Abo’s early departure comes during a turbulent period for the long-running breakfast program following Karl Stefanovic’s exit from Channel Nine.
Stefanovic left the network last month after controversy surrounding an interview with far-right activist Tommy Robinson, which was uploaded to his YouTube podcast before being removed following criticism.
Nine subsequently said Stefanovic could not continue in his role at the network while independently hosting the podcast.
His departure has triggered growing speculation about the future direction of Today, with reports suggesting Nine is considering a major overhaul of the program.
Veteran entertainment presenter Richard Wilkins and sports presenter Danika Mason are among the familiar faces reportedly facing uncertain futures as executives review the existing line-up.
Mason recently announced that she is also expecting her first child with fiancé and former NRL player Liam Knight.
Melbourne Relocation Reportedly Under Consideration
One proposal reportedly being examined would relocate Today from Sydney to Melbourne as part of a wider relaunch planned for 2027.
The revamped program had been expected to place Melbourne-raised Abo at the centre of its new identity once she returned from maternity leave.
Although born in Syria, Abo grew up in Melbourne and has strong connections to the city, potentially making her a natural choice to lead a Melbourne-based version of the show.
The relocation idea is not entirely new. Former Nine executive Sam Chisholm reportedly proposed a similar move more than two decades ago, shortly after Stefanovic began his sometimes-turbulent tenure on the program.
The plan is now believed to be receiving renewed attention as Nine searches for ways to rebuild the franchise and close the ratings gap with rival breakfast program Sunrise.
Any relocation could result in significant changes both in front of the camera and behind the scenes.
Today Faces a Difficult Rebuilding Task
Television insiders have suggested that Stefanovic’s departure provides Nine with a rare opportunity to reconsider the entire structure of the program.
One industry executive argued that the remaining presenters, including Abo, may need to be repositioned and promoted differently if the show is to challenge Sunrise more effectively.
The comments reflect the scale of the task facing Nine as Today continues to struggle in the national ratings.
Figures reported last month placed Sunrise at approximately 456,000 viewers nationally, compared with about 226,000 for Today.
For now, however, Abo’s focus remains firmly away from television.
With her doctors monitoring both her and her baby, the presenter is prioritising rest, family and the safe arrival of her first child — even if it means leaving the Today studio without the farewell she had hoped to share with viewers.
