Amanda Keller Opens Up About the Emotional Birthday Moment That Changed Her View of Her Husband’s Parkinson’s Battle

Amanda Keller Opens Up About the Quiet Heartbreak Behind Her Husband’s Parkinson’s Battle

Beloved Australian radio and television personality Amanda Keller has shared an emotional insight into her family’s private struggle as her husband, Harley Oliver, continues living with Parkinson’s disease.

The veteran broadcaster, widely known for her warmth and humour, revealed that her recent 64th birthday became one of the most emotionally challenging days she had experienced as her husband’s primary carer.

A Difficult Birthday Behind Closed Doors

Speaking on her Double A Chattery podcast, Amanda recalled how Harley was having a particularly difficult morning on her birthday.

As messages arrived from friends hoping she was being treated and “spoilt”, Amanda’s attention was completely focused on comforting her husband.

She admitted that exhaustion and frustration briefly took over, leaving her angry that Parkinson’s had once again become the centre of their lives—even on a day that was supposed to be about her.

It was a deeply honest admission that reflected the complicated emotions often experienced by people caring for someone they love.

One Question Changed Her Perspective

The difficult day took an unexpected turn when Amanda later spoke about the experience with a woman she did not know.

Rather than simply offering sympathy, the stranger asked Amanda to think about what being “spoilt” genuinely meant to her.

The question caused Amanda to reconsider the entire morning.

Instead of focusing only on what Parkinson’s had taken away, she realised she had spent another birthday beside the man she had loved for almost 36 years.

Although the disease had changed many parts of their daily life, Harley remained the kind, gentle and loving person she had always known.

That realisation brought Amanda to tears and helped lift some of the emotional weight she had been carrying.

Finding Gratitude During the Hardest Moments

Amanda publicly revealed Harley’s Parkinson’s diagnosis in 2023, after the family had largely kept his condition away from the spotlight.

Since then, she has spoken honestly about the realities of becoming his primary carer while making it clear that she does not want the illness to define their marriage.

Amanda said she has been learning to recognise moments of happiness and connection, even when fear, sadness and exhaustion threaten to become overwhelming.

She also credited regular sessions with a kinesiologist for helping her focus on gratitude and acknowledge the love that continues to surround her family.

Their Sons Have Stepped Up for Their Father

Amanda also praised the couple’s two sons, Liam and Jack, for the strength and maturity they have shown throughout their father’s illness.

She said watching them help care for Harley had made her immensely proud.

Their support has helped the family face difficult moments together and demonstrated how their bond has grown stronger despite the challenges caused by Parkinson’s.

While the disease has changed their family life in many ways, Amanda believes it has also shown them the depth of the love and loyalty they share.

Harley and Amanda have been married for 33 years.

Family Means More Than Any Career Achievement

After decades as one of Australia’s most recognisable broadcasting personalities, Amanda said the experience had reinforced what truly mattered to her.

Although she remains proud of her successful career in radio and television, she believes no professional accomplishment could ever compare with the importance of her husband and children.

As Harley continues to face Parkinson’s, Amanda’s story offers a moving reminder of the unseen emotional burden carried by many families.

It is also a story about perspective—about recognising that grief and gratitude can exist together, and that even during life’s most painful chapters, love can still provide moments of comfort, strength and hope.
