The brother of Melbourne footballer Nathan Fitzgerald has spoken publicly about the final hours they spent together, revealing a simple family moment that has become one of his most cherished memories.
Nathan, 27, died in hospital on Monday evening after suffering catastrophic head injuries during an amateur football match for Epping Football Netball Club at Lalor Recreation Reserve in Melbourne’s north on Saturday.
As family, teammates and the wider football community continue to grieve, Nathan’s younger brother, Matthew Fitzgerald, has reflected on the last conversation they shared before the tragedy unfolded.
“I take comfort in the fact I’ve got a lot of memories with Nathan,” Matthew told News Corp.
The brothers had spent the morning watching Australia’s FIFA World Cup match against Egypt together, only hours before Nathan headed to the football ground.
“That was a special morning and the memory will stay with me forever,” Matthew said.
A player enjoying one of the best periods of his career
Matthew said Nathan had been full of confidence in recent weeks, producing some of his strongest football performances and taking enormous pride in his form.
According to his brother, Nathan had repeatedly returned home excited after being named among his team’s best players.
“He kept saying, ‘I got best on, I got best on,'” Matthew recalled, describing his brother as someone who was genuinely enjoying his football and embracing every opportunity on the field.
His excitement made the sudden tragedy even harder for those closest to him to comprehend.
Remembered for his humour, kindness and passion for teaching
Away from football, Nathan was known as someone who could light up any room.
Matthew described him as a playful, cheeky personality who loved making people laugh and never missed an opportunity to brighten someone else’s day.
Teaching was another passion that defined Nathan’s life.
A respected teacher at Mernda Central College, he often returned home eager to share stories about his students and the moments that made each school day meaningful.
“He loved his job so much,” Matthew said. “He was always talking about his students and what had happened during the day.”
A future cut heartbreakingly short
Nathan’s death came only weeks after another joyful milestone in his life.
He had recently become engaged to his partner, Hannah, after proposing to her.
Hannah remained by his side alongside Nathan’s immediate family at Royal Melbourne Hospital until his passing on Monday evening.
Matthew said his family’s Christian faith has become an important source of strength as they attempt to navigate an unimaginable loss.
A devastating accident that has shaken the football community
Nathan suffered multiple blows to the head while attempting to make a tackle during Saturday’s match.
After a head clash and another impact from a knee or boot, he fell head-first onto a covered concrete cricket pitch, suffering critical injuries despite the immediate efforts of medical personnel, teammates and emergency responders.
The incident has also prompted renewed discussion about player safety and the presence of hard cricket pitches at community football grounds.
Tributes pour in for a life that touched so many
The loss of Nathan Fitzgerald has left an enormous void across Melbourne’s football and education communities.
More than 120 members of Epping Football Netball Club gathered the day after the incident to show their support, while young players and teammates paid tribute by wearing jerseys in his honour.
Following his passing, the club shared a heartfelt message: “Rest in Peace & Love, Fitzy.”
Mernda Central College also remembered Nathan as an exceptional young man whose warmth, kindness and genuine care left a lasting impression on students, staff and families alike.
Meanwhile, the community has rallied behind the Fitzgerald family, with a fundraising campaign raising more than $80,000 as tributes continue to flow for a man remembered not only as a talented footballer, but as a devoted teacher, loving fiancé, cherished son and beloved brother.
