The legendary singer has opened up about life as a first-time grandfather, revealing how the arrival of grandson Jett has filled him and wife Jill with fresh happiness and hope for the future.
A grandson who changed everything
John’s son, James Farnham, and his partner, Dr Tessa Effendi, welcomed their first child, Jett John Farnham, on June 18.
The couple shared the happy news publicly on July 1, introducing the newest member of the Farnham family and marking a milestone that quickly delighted fans across Australia.
Reflecting on becoming a grandfather, John admitted the experience has brought a new sense of purpose.
He said the arrival of little Jett had given both him and Jill an enormous emotional lift, adding that he feels incredibly grateful to still be surrounded by the people he loves most.
As he enters this new stage of life, John says he is ready to embrace everything it brings.
One very special audience
Although millions know him as one of Australia’s greatest voices, John joked that these days he has a much smaller audience in mind.
The music legend revealed he only plans to sing lullabies for one very important listener—his grandson.
Still, he couldn’t completely rule out singing more in the future, adding with a smile that people should “never say never.”
John also reflected on how his priorities have changed over the years, admitting that seeing his children happy now means more to him than ever before.
A touching family tribute
James and Tessa chose a meaningful name for their son, honouring the family patriarch by giving the newborn the middle name John.
Born at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Private Hospital, little Jett weighed 3.176 kilograms and arrived slightly earlier than expected.
The proud new parents described him as their entire world, saying they were completely smitten despite the sleepless nights that come with welcoming a newborn.
Adding another heartfelt touch, they announced Jett’s arrival on John Farnham’s 76th birthday, making the celebration even more memorable for the family.
John and Jill, who have now been married for more than five decades, said they were “over the moon” to welcome their first grandchild and couldn’t be prouder of James and Tessa.
Friends say John is already embracing his new title of “Pa.”
More family milestones to celebrate
The arrival of Jett follows another joyful occasion for the Farnham family.
In early 2024, John’s eldest son, Robert Farnham, married his longtime partner Melissa Kelly in a celebration that brought the family together.
John proudly attended the wedding, with those close to the family describing him as an emotional and incredibly proud father throughout the day.
Strength after difficult years
The celebrations come after an incredibly challenging period for the Farnham family.
In 2022, John was diagnosed with oral cancer and underwent major surgery to remove a tumour before having his jaw reconstructed during a lengthy operation.
In his memoir, he revealed his health has since stabilised, explaining that he now enjoys taking life at a gentler pace and has no desire to push himself beyond his limits.
Earlier this year, James also shared encouraging news, revealing his father had received the all-clear and was doing well.
He described John as active, in good spirits and already looking forward to passing on everything he once taught his own sons to little Jett.
