Chipper Kevin Keegan, 75, jokes ‘I’m still alive’ as he makes 1st public appearance since shock cancer diagnosis
FOOTBALL legend Kevin Keegan cracks a joke about still being alive as he makes his first public appearance after his cancer diagnosis.
The former England star and Newcastle United manager popped up on social media ahead of his appearance at the Tyne Theatre tomorrow in conversation with Peter Graves.
In a short clip on X, formerly Twitter, Graves said: “I’m starting to get really excited because 48 hours from now the Tyne Theatre in Newcastle is going to be packed out.
“I’m going to be walking out with my hero and yours, the one and only Kevin Keegan.
“We’re having a last-minute meeting with the legend that’s here…”
King Kev is then seen sitting on a sofa, wearing a sharp light grey suit and black shirt.
As they greet each other, Graves says: “How ya doing, mate?”
With Keegan replying: “Still alive… thank you.”
“Great to see you,” adds Graves as he sits down on the sofa. “You’re looking fantastic.”
Keegan then says: “Really looking forward to going to Newcastle, obviously.
“It’s not my second home, it’s my first home, really, as you know.
“When I’m going there, I’m always happy.”
He then adds: “Away the lads,” as Graves also joins in.
At the beginning of the year, the 75-year-old former England manager was admitted to hospital after suffering with abdominal symptoms.
His family then confirmed the Liverpool icon was diagnosed with cancer and will undergo treatment.
Keegan won three First Division Championships, two UEFA Cups, one FA Cup and a European Cup in his playing career at Liverpool.
He also won the Ballon d’Or twice – the only Englishman ever to achieve this feat.
As a manager, he is famous for his “I would love it if we beat them” rant at Sir Alex Ferguson as his Newcastle side threw away a 13-point lead and lost the Premier League title to Man Utd in 1996.
The former England boss also spent two seasons on Tyneside as a player before so nearly landing the Magpies’ first league title since 1927 as manager in 1996.
Keegan, who scored 49 goals in 85 appearances for the club as a player, took them from the brink of relegation to the third tier to the Prem in just two seasons.
He then went on to lead the club to two consecutive second place finishes and a Uefa Cup quarter final, almost beating Manchester United to the title in 1996.
