‘Donkey thinks he’s a lion’ – Man Utd legend Roy Keane appears to ramp up Bruno Fernandes feud after ‘lies’ interview

ROY KEANE appears to have ramped up his war or words with Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes with a thinly-veiled dig on his Instagram.

It comes after Red Devils skipper Fernandes ripped into Old Trafford great Keane on Monday for peddling “unacceptable lies” about him.

Fernandes broke the Premier League assists record when he notched his 21st of the campaign in United’s season finale against Brighton on Sunday.

But he wasn’t happy that Keane, 54, had accused him of prioritising his individual glory over the team earlier this month.

And the Portuguese playmaker, 31, attempted to set the record straight during an appearance on The Diary of a CEO podcast.

He told podcast host Steven Bartlett: “What I don’t like is when people lie about things. I’ve always taken criticism from everyone and anyone, and I never replied to anything whatsoever.

“People have an opinion, they think it’s good, bad, whatever. And, in this case, what Roy Keane said is a lie. Luckily for me, everything is recorded.

“Imagine if it wasn’t. People will think, ‘Bruno is the guy always trying to get the assist’. I accept his criticism, I accept that he might like me as a player or not, like me as a person or not.

“But what I don’t like is that he puts words in my mouth that have not been said, that’s the only thing I don’t like.”

He also revealed he had reached out to former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to get Keane’s number and discuss the incident in private.

However, after Fernandes’ comments made headlines, Keane was quick to take the clash back into the public sphere.

The former United captain took to Instagram on bank holiday Monday to post a picture of a donkey in the spotlight on a stage, with two lions cast in shadows.

Keane’s story post to his 2.5 million followers was captioned: “Too much attention makes a donkey think he’s a lion.”

Speaking on The Overlap earlier this month, Keane had said: “After the game he [Fernandes] got interviewed and the captain of Manchester United said: ‘A few times, I probably should have shot but I made the passes’. Wow.

“How can your mindset be not to win the match but be about an individual record?

“He won’t be winning trophies, not with that mindset of the team. They’re giving up two goals and everyone’s getting all giddy because he’s equalled the record for assists. It’s mind-boggling. It’s a circus act.”

It appears Keane had actually misinterpreted Fernandes’ comments.

Fernandes had, in fact, said: “There were probably moments today when I should have passed instead of shot. I’m very happy for the assist, but more than that, I’m happy for the win and to finish the season on a high.”

Keane, alongside members of the Class of ’92 including Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt, has been a particularly vocal critic of United in recent years.

Fernandes is not the first United player to hit back at criticism from the club’s former stars this season.

Lisandro Martinez hit back at Scholes and Butt in January, claiming pundits never have the nerve to repeat criticism face to face after the pair mocked the defender’s size in relation to Erling Haaland before United’s 2-0 derby win.

On his attempt to squash his beef with Keane, Fernandes added on podcast: “I’ve never ever had something to say, I’ve never said something wrong.

“I even asked Ole [for] his number to text him to be honest, to have a word with him to say that I don’t mind the criticism [but] I don’t like when people lie about things that I say.

“It goes a little bit over the top of the things that I think are acceptable. I accept criticism. I accept that he can say things that I don’t like and I don’t like to see it.

“But, as I said before, that improves me. What I don’t like is that people make their own words on what I say and it’s not true.

“Obviously I’ve always showed a lot of respect for Roy Keane and for everything he’s done for the club and for everything he’s always said.”
