Rory McIlroy pays caddie staggering amount of money from £3.3m Masters prize
Rory McIlroy has been supported by his childhood friend and caddie Harry Diamond since 2017, and the pair have just claimed their second Masters title together — here’s how much Diamond is estimated to earn from the victory
Not only did Rory McIlroy get to celebrate his second Masters triumph with his family on Sunday evening, but he also raised a toast to the victory alongside his closest childhood companion. McIlroy has had Harry Diamond on the bag since 2017, and the pair have shared countless unforgettable moments together out on the course.
Last year’s Masters marked the first major championship the duo claimed together, making the accomplishment all the more meaningful for the Holywood golfer. “I’ve known Harry since I was seven years old,” McIlroy revealed, fighting back tears during his post-round press conference following the 2025 Masters victory. “I met him on the putting green at Holywood Golf Club. We’ve had so many good times together. He’s been like a big brother to me throughout my life.
“To be able to share this with him after all the close calls we’ve had, and all the [nonsense] he’s had to take from people who don’t know anything about the game. This one is just as much his as it is mine. He’s a massive part of what I do, and I couldn’t think of anyone better to share it with.”
McIlroy was alluding to the scrutiny Diamond endured during the Northern Irishman’s lengthy quest for a fifth major title. Yet the pair have well and truly silenced their doubters, combining for two Masters titles and, in doing so, making Diamond an extraordinarily wealthy man. Caddies typically earn 10 per cent of their player’s prize money in professional golf, though McIlroy may well reward Diamond with a more generous cut. McIlroy pocketed £3.3million ($4.5m) for securing the first major of the year, meaning Diamond will likely take home at least £330,000 for his efforts.
Six-time major champion McIlroy has accumulated up to £90m in prize money and bonuses since Diamond took on the role of his caddie, suggesting Diamond’s total earnings from the position are in the region of £9m, reports the Express.
Diamond was a highly capable amateur golfer in his own right, demonstrated by his victory in the 2012 West of Ireland Championship, one of the most prestigious competitions in Irish amateur golf.
Despite this, the Belfast-born caddie maintains an exceptionally low profile and has steered clear of speaking to the press while carrying his best friend’s bag. Diamond took over the role permanently from JP Fitzgerald, who had been on McIlroy’s bag for four major triumphs.
McIlroy said this week: “I think as an only child… he was like the big brother I never had, you know? And I think that’s what makes it so special.”

Rory McIlroy’s caddie Harry Diamond is set to receive an eye-watering sum after guiding his long-time friend to another Masters victory. The triumph sees McIlroy become part of an elite group to have retained the title at Augusta National, alongside Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods.
The defending champion raced into a sizeable lead but saw several challengers close the gap as the weekend wore on. He ended on 12-under-par after scoring one-under on Sunday, narrowly staying ahead of Scottie Scheffler by a single stroke.
McIlroy would have been relieved to avoid a repeat of the playoff required for his first Masters win. However, the competitive leaderboard reflected the importance of players choosing the best shot and having the right caddie by their side.
In Diamond’s case, these estimates mean he would be paid an astonishing £336,000 after helping McIlroy win his second Masters title. That figure is more than four times what former Masters champion Jon Rahm received for his efforts at Augusta.
The 31-year-old won the Masters three years ago but struggled this time around. Rahm finished on one-over-par, tying for 38th place and receiving £75,380 (£101, 250) in prize money.
It is not the first time that Diamond has earned comparable money to the world ’s top golfers. He reportedly had a net worth of around £1.9m last year through his work with McIlroy.
Despite being paid handsomely, Diamond has a long way to go to match the earnings of Tiger Woods’ former caddie Steve Williams. He worked with the golfing icon from 1999 until 2011 and was considered the richest sportsperson in New Zealand.
Williams amassed a reported fortune of approximately £15.7m after helping Woods win 13 of his 15 major titles during their time together. Overall, the 62-year-old guided Woods to 64 of his 82 PGA victories. After the duo parted ways, Williams subsequently worked with top golfers Adam Scott and Jason Day.
However, there is little sign of McIlroy and Diamond’s partnership coming to an end. A year ago, the Masters champion reflected on their journey together and paid an emotional tribute to Diamond after finally winning at Augusta.
“Yeah, I’ve known Harry since I was seven years old,” he said. “I met him on the putting green at Holywood Golf Club. We’ve had so many good times together. He’s been like a big brother to me the whole way through my life.
“To be able to share this with him after all the close calls that we’ve had, all the c**p that he’s had to take from people that don’t know anything about the game, yeah, this one is just as much his as it is mine. He’s a massive part of what I do and I couldn’t think of anyone better to share it with than him.”
