Agonising Search for Missing British Teen Near ‘Dracula’s Castle’: Rescuers Battle Blizzards, Avalanches and Heartbreaking False Alarms

For more than two weeks, Romanian rescue teams have fought against brutal winter conditions in a desperate effort to locate 18-year-old British hiker George Smyth, who vanished near Romania’s legendary Bran Castle — often referred to worldwide as “Dracula’s Castle.”
Yet as days pass and the mountains grow harsher, hope has become a fragile thread stretched thin between determination and despair.

The Last Call for Help — and the Only Real Clue

George Smyth set out alone on 23 November, hiking through the Bucegi Mountains from the resort of Poiana Brașov toward Bran. Late that evening, he managed to make a distress call to Romania’s emergency number 112, telling operators he was “exhausted, freezing cold, limping, and unsure of his location.”

Rescuers rushed to the coordinates provided, but all they found was his backpack, left behind with almost all of his survival equipment still inside — a tent, sleeping bag, and food supplies.
Why he was separated from his gear remains one of the most troubling questions of the entire operation.

A Brutal Winter Battlefield: Avalanches, 2-Metre Snow, and Deadly Winds

From the moment the search began, Mother Nature proved to be the greatest enemy.

Snow in parts of the Bucegi Mountains has reached over two metres deep, with entire trails buried beneath thick layers of ice. Rescue officials warned that the avalanche danger had risen to Level 4 — “very high”, making the area extremely unstable.
Blizzards, whiteouts, freezing winds and thick fog routinely forced teams to retreat for their own safety.

Drone flights were often grounded due to strong winds. Helicopters deployed during clearer windows were unable to land in many places because of the deep snow, rugged cliffs and invisible drops hidden under ice.

Even specially trained rescue dogs struggled — the heavy snow trapped scents deep beneath layers of ice, rendering their abilities nearly useless.

False Hope: Moments When Rescuers Thought They Saw Him

One of the most emotional blows came when a member of the rescue team reported seeing a “figure” that looked like a person in the distance during a rare break in the storm.

“For a moment, we thought we could see him,” the rescuer said.

But when the team pushed forward through the deep snow, battling collapsing drifts and near-whiteout conditions, they found nothing.
No new footprints.
No movement.
Just the cold, empty mountainside.

It was a devastating moment of false hope, leaving the rescuers shaken and emotionally drained.

Every Modern Tool Deployed — Yet the Mountains Swallowed All Traces

Romania’s Salvamont crews threw everything they had into the operation:

  • Ground teams combed valleys, ridges and ravines.

  • Helicopters, including military aircraft, were sent into the mountains whenever weather allowed.

  • Thermal drones scanned vast snow-covered surfaces for signs of body heat.

  • Dogs and specialised avalanche teams worked along possible paths George might have taken.

But day after day, the mountains yielded nothing more than the abandoned backpack. The deep snow, dangerous cornices and avalanche risk made several areas completely unreachable.

Eventually — after multiple blizzards, warnings from meteorologists and near-accidents involving rescue teams — authorities had no choice but to temporarily suspend the main search effort until weather conditions improve.

Lingering Questions — and a Mother’s Unbroken Hope

One of the biggest mysteries is why George did not follow rescuers’ advice to return to the nearby Mălăiești Chalet, a safe shelter equipped with heat, beds and supplies.
Had he reached it, he likely would have survived the night.

Yet his last known movement suggests he pushed farther into the mountains instead.

George’s mother continues to pray for a miracle, insisting she believes her son “found a way to hold on, even against all odds.”

The Search Paused — But Not Over

Although the official rescue operation has been suspended, Salvamont leaders emphasise that the search is not abandoned. Teams will return the moment the weather stabilises, and local hikers and villagers have been asked to report anything unusual — even the smallest detail.

For now, the Bucegi Mountains remain silent, covered in deep snow and mystery.
And somewhere within that frozen expanse lies the answer to what happened to 18-year-old George Smyth — still lost, still hoped for, still searched for.
