A NICE GESTURE FROM LIVERPOOL: Liverpool Will Pay Remainder of Diogo Jota’s Contract to His Family

As the footballing world continues to mourn the tragic loss of Diogo Jota and his younger brother Andre Silva – who both died after a fatal car crash in Zamora, Spain – Liverpool have reportedly agreed to pay the late star’s family the rest of his contract.

The footballing world – including those associated with the Anfield-based outfit – are in a state of mourning and reports have now revealed that the club are poised to cough up the rest of Jota’s contract to his wife and three beautiful children.

Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, married her childhood sweetheart just two weeks before his sad and untimely passing – and the club are dedicated to providing them with the utmost support as they come to terms with life without the Porto-born ace.

Jota, who turned out 182 times for the Reds following his transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers, earned £140,000 on a week-by-week basis during his stint at Anfield – and popular Portuguese publication Record have revealed that the club are going to pay his family the rest of his contract.

That equates to £14,560,000 given that his Liverpool contract was set to expire in the summer of 2027. Not only that, but the club’s top brass have announced their decision to immortalise the No.20 shirt – which was worn by Jota for five successive seasons.

Record’s report has also revealed that several figures associated with Liverpool have travelled to Gondomar for the wake, while thousands of supporters have visited the Anfield memorial next to Liverpool’s ground, leaving flowers, scarves and shirts.

Jota, after helping Wolverhampton Wanderers secure promotion back to the Premier League, joined the Reds in the summer of 2020 – and he quickly became integral to their success. In 2024/25, he won the English top flight title under Arne Slot.

A statement from Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes promised that they will celebrate Jota’s career in the coming days. “In the coming days, we as a club will look to honour our beloved Number 20 with the respect and affection he so richly deserves.

“We will strive to make these tributes meaningful and inclusive of our supporters, to whom Diogo meant so much. For now, we express a love that is filled with deep sorrow and pain. We have lost someone truly irreplaceable. Rest in peace, Diogo. YNWA.”
