Peta Credlin reveals theory Anthony Albanese will stand down as Prime Minister before the next election
- Peta Credlin believes Albanese will step down
- She cited clear problems post-budget
Sky News star Peta Credlin believes Labor will not go into the next federal election with Anthony Albanese as its leader.
Credlin, Tony Abbott‘s former chief of staff, on Thursday claimed Albanese likely went ahead with highly controversial tax changes in the Federal Budget because he doesn’t plan to be re-elected.
The Budget featured massive changes to the Capital Gains Tax discount and negative gearing, both systems which Labor promised not to touch at the election last year.
While Albanese led Labor to victory at that election, multiple polls show One Nation is hot on the party’s heels courtesy of a remarkable surge in popularity this year.
Credlin believes the One Nation problem will fall on the next Labor leader.
‘(Sky News host Andrew) Clennell and I are on a unity ticket that says Anthony Albanese will retire this term,’ she said. ‘He will walk away, having won a great swag of seats, but avoid staying around to cop the punishment for his lies.’
Clennell on Tuesday had said he ‘genuinely wonders whether Anthony Albanese is running at the next election’.
‘He’s 64 next year, he has done something he’s never really done in terms of putting these big controversial proposals forward.’
